Sailing's Spring Season Off to Impressive Start
Feb 15, 2020 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane sailing team kicked off its spring season on a high note on Saturday, currently standing in fourth in a competitive field in the Nelson Roltsch Regatta.
"Overall it was a very positive day for us," head coach Charles Higgins said. "It was long and we got a lot of racing in, and it's been fun to see our team get better each day. To be sitting in the top four at this stage is terrific, and the whole team has been pushing hard to get us to this point."
The Green Wave defeated Jacksonville (1-2-5), USF (1-2-4), Texas (1-2-3), UC Santa Barbara (2-3-4) and Wisconsin (1-2-6) in the first round on Saturday.
The team then came back out in the second round to earn victories over USF (1-2-3), UC Santa Barbara (1-2-5) and Wisconsin (1-2-3).
Quinn Keenan and Kate Lenhard alternated with Caroline Benson and Kit Stoll to sail in boat one. Cameron Giblin and Grace Siwicki skippered and crewed every race from boat two, while Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and Amelia Schofield did the same from boat three.
Tulane is back in action on Sunday, as the team readies for round three to begin at 10 a.m. on Lake Pontchartrain. College of Charleston (12/1) is currently leading the regatta, followed by Navy (12/1) in second and Jacksonville (9/4) in third.
"Hopefully we will continue showing more improvement tomorrow," Higgins added. "We have a chance to move up the standings if we sail to our ability so we'll take it one race at a time."
