Feb 16, 2020 | Men's Basketball
WICHITA, Kan. – The Tulane men's basketball team dropped an American Athletic Conference road game, 82-57, at Wichita State on Sunday afternoon at Koch Arena.
Â
Christion Thompson led three Green Wave (10-15, 2-11 AAC) scorers in double-figures with 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Jordan Walker scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half. Teshaun Hightower chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Â
Dexter Dennis guided the Shockers (19-6, 7-5 AAC) with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Tyson Etienne added 20 more points.
Â
Wichita State made four of its first five shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, to open up an early 10-5 edge just over three minutes into the action. The Shockers improved their lead to double-digits, 21-9, just over eight minutes in, before erupting with a 20-4 scoring run over the subsequent seven minutes to open up a 41-14 lead.
Â
Tulane had trouble finding any rhythm offensively, making just seven shots from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, as Wichita grew its advantage to as many as 32 in the final minute before taking a 50-20 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Â
The Shockers went 17-for-29 (.586) from the field and 8-for-15 (.533) beyond the 3-point arc in the first half despite committing 10 turnovers.
Â
The Green Wave chewed into their deficit over the first five minutes of the second half, using an 8-0 scoring run capped by a pair of Thompson free throws to make it 55-32. Wichita used the next five minutes to push their lead back over 30 points, but Tulane used another scoring spree – this time with 10 straight points – to cut the deficit to 22 with seven minutes left.
Â
The Shockers went on an 11-1 scoring run over the next three-and-a-half minutes left to push the margin back over 30 once more to reject any chance of a Tulane comeback in the final minutes of the game.
Â
Tulane would outscore Wichita State, 37-32, in the second half and shot a respectable 13-for-28 (.464) from the field while committing just one turnover.
Â
Tulane returns home Wednesday, February 19 to host SMU. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on the WatchESPN app.
