
Track and Field Readies for AAC Championship in Birmingham

NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane indoor track and field team is headed to Birmingham, Alabama this weekend, gearing up for postseason action in the American Athletic Conference Championship at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The meet opens on Friday with the 400-meter dash at 12:55 p.m. Sophomore Oneke Gwan, senior Maya Harewood, sophomore Louise Jones, sophomore Hunter Robinson and junior Asja Thompson will represent Tulane in the race. The 60-meter hurdles are next up, beginning with the trials at 1:35 p.m. Representing the Green Wave in the hurdles is graduate student Jessica Duckett, senior Brandi Hughes and junior Kyah Loyd.
Sophomore Aldrianna Dupree is the sole member of Tulane's roster running in the 60-meter dash, set to start at 1:55 p.m., just before sophomore Trina Malej and junior Danielle Wember will compete in the long jump at 2 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., senior Paige Fatland and junior Pauline Helm will kick off the distance events in the 800 meter.
Dupree, Robinson and Harewood will head back out on the track at 3 p.m., running in the 200-meter dash. The 5,000 meter run is next up at 3:30 p.m., with junior Bridgid Selfors and senior Mary Catherine Stovall representing the Olive and Blue. The pole vault begins at the same time, as sophomores Kristina Leggas and Nastja Modic set to compete for the title to wrap up day one.
The high jump starts the day on Saturday for Tulane, with sophomore Olivia Hicks and junior Emma King set to compete at 9:45 a.m. Malej and junior Jordyn Lesh are back out at 11 a.m. for the triple jump, before the 400-meter dash finals at 11:40 a.m. The 60-meter hurdle finals are set for 12:10 p.m. and the 60-meter dash finals will start at 12:30 p.m. Also competing at 12:30 p.m. is freshman Maren Butler in the shot put.
The day continues with the 800 meter at 1 p.m. and the 200-meter dash finals at 1:20 p.m., before Selfors and Stovall head back on the track for the 3,000 meter run at 1:40 p.m. The Green Wave will close the weekend with the 4x400 meter relay at 2:40 p.m., as Harewood, Loyd, Jones and Robinson look to break into the top three standings.
Tulane has several athletes who are in position to place this weekend. The team brings a double threat to the track in the 60-meter hurdles, as Loyd and Hughes currently rank fourth and fifth in the conference with respective times of 8.44 and 8.47 seconds this season.
Malej has consistently improved in every meet this season and currently ranks second in the AAC in the triple jump, most recently recording a 12.95 meter mark to move up to fourth overall in school history. Also second in the conference is sophomore Nastja Modic with a distance of 4.10 meters in the pole vault. Sophomore Kristina Leggas checks in just behind Modic, in sixth with a 3.85 meter mark.
Starting her first season with the Green Wave on an impressive note is freshman Maren Butler, who's eighth in the league with a distance of 14.18 meters in the shot put, putting her at third in program history.
In last year's AAC Championship, Tulane swept the pole vault podium to open the weekend as Rebekah Markel claimed her first league title, followed by Alex Potts and Modic in respective second and third place spots. Hughes placed second in the 60-meter hurdles and Loyd finished seventh. As a team, the Green wave finished in ninth place overall with 35 points.
