
Tulane Drops Final Road Game of the Season at ECU, 53-50

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Tulane University women's basketball team dropped the final road game of the regular season at ECU, 53-50, in Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum.
Tulane (12-16, 7-8) outrebounded ECU (9-19, 6-9) 53-28. The Green Wave logged 15 assists and shot 37.5 (21-56) percent from the field, while the Pirates had eight assists and went 33.3 (21-63) percent from the field. Junior Krystal Freeman led the Green Wave with 21 points and snagged 10 rebounds. Sophomore Mia Hiede recorded 11 rebounds for the Wave.
"Just a disappointing loss," Green Wave head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We had the game in hand and the turnovers killed us. We just weren't able to recover."
Tulane started the third quarter with an 8-2 run to extend the lead to 33-23 with seven minutes to play. Junior Sierra Cheatham led the charge for the Wave with a layup and a corner three. The teams traded buckets the rest of the quarter with the Green Wave taking a 41-30 lead into the fourth.
After Tulane opened the fourth with a jumper from freshman Irina Parau, ECU went on a 9-0 run to cut the Wave's lead to 43-39 with six minutes to play. Freeman broke the streak with a jumper then the Pirates went on a 9-0 run to take a 48-45 lead with 2:35 left in the game. Freeman scored on a layup on the next possession to cut ECU's lead to 48-47 with two minutes to play. Tulane was never able to take the lead back and ECU set the final score at 53-50.
Lashonda Monk led ECU with 21 points, six rebounds and nine steals. Dominique Claytor chipped in 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Pirates. ECU forced 34 Tulane turnovers and scored 34 points off the change of possession.
Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter with neither team scoring for the first three minutes. ECU took a 10-9 lead after the opening quarter. Freeman led the Wave with five points in the first. Tulane opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 19-10 lead with 7:23 remaining in the first half. The Green Wave led 25-21 going into halftime.
In the first half, the Olive and Blue outrebounded ECU 29-14. Tulane held ECU to 11.1 (1-9) percent shooting from three. The Green Wave had seven assists and four steals in the opening 20 minutes. Freeman led the way with 11 first half points.
Up next, the Green Wave will conclude the regular season as they host Temple on Monday, March 2. Tip-off for Senior Day is set for 7 p.m. at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
