Coming off of its second sweep of a weekend opponent in three weeks, the Green Wave jumped into its second poll of the season on Monday, sitting at No. 23 in the D1baseball Top 25, while remaining steady at No. 29 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30 list.
Â
Tulane improved to 9-2 on the season after taking all three games from Middle Tennessee over the weekend, improving the team's mark to 6-1 at home at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in 2020. It was a weekend unlike many seen at the park, as Friday the team tossed a no-hitter, walked-off after a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth and saw a player hit for the cycle on Sunday to cap the weekend.
Â
For their efforts, pitcher Braden Olthoff was named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week after his six-inning, eight strikeout performance on Friday, while Trevor Minder was named to the weekly honor roll after accounting for the game-winning home run on Saturday and producing that cycle on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Tulane was able to bounce back in a big way after falling to New Orleans last Wednesday night, scoring 21 runs in three games, blasting five home runs in three days after coming into last weekend with just five on the year as a group.
Â
On the mound, the pitching staff has already eclipsed its entire 2019 shutout total through 11 games with two this year, as in the no-hitter Friday the three pitchers used in Olthoff, Clifton Slagel and Keagan Gillies produced 12 strikeouts, the fourth double figure strikeout game for the staff this year.
Â
Texas Southern comes into the game with a 3-10 overall record on the year, coming off of a weekend series victory over UAPB to open SWAC play. The Tigers started the year dropping their first nine games in a row, before upsetting then-No. 4 ranked Mississippi State in Starkville 8-4 last Tuesday and taking two of three over the weekend against the Golden Lions.
Â
This is the fourth meeting between Tulane and Texas Southern in the all-time series, with Tulane winning all three previous meetings leading into Tuesday afternoon.
