NEW ORLEANS, La. – Tulane bowling coach Hayley Veitch has announced the signing of Yarelis Alvarez to a National Letter of Intent to bowl for the Green Wave beginning in the 2020-21 season. She signed her NLI prior to the NCAA recruiting freeze on March 5.
"I am looking forward to the addition of Yarelis to the team," Veitch said. "Her dedication and accomplishments to the sport of bowling speak for themselves. It is never easy to shine when bowling isn't big in an area, but Yarelis has certainly made a name for herself and continues to prove that you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it!
Alvarez, a native of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, will come to Tulane after earning a national reputation. Her illustrious high school career included three New Mexico State Team Championships. Alvarez was named to the 2019 and 2020 New Mexico 5A All-State Girls teams. She placed first at the Girls High Series State Tournament in 2019 and second at the Girls High Game in the same year. At the high school level, she bowled her high game of 268 during the 2018-19 season.
Alverez has bowled three 300 games in her career across all circuits. She finished ninth at the 2019 Junior Gold National Tournament U-17 division, which earned her paid entry for the 2020 Team USA Trials. She also placed 150th out of 856 at the 2018 Junior Gold National Tournament in the U-20 division. In 2017, Alvarez placed 87th out of 340 participants at the Junior Gold National Tournament U-15 division.
She also made a name for herself on the Junior Bowlers Tour-Southwest Scratch Division as she took home fifth place at the 2020 Strike Gold Lanes. Alvarez also placed second at the 2019 Las Vegas Main Event Open Scratch Singles and Scratch Team. The 2019 season was a record year for Alvarez as she was named 2019 Girls Scratch Bowler of the Year in the New Mexico-Texas Conference on the Junior Bowlers Tour. She also earned All-Conference Team honors and an All-Star Team selection in the same year.
In 2019, Alvarez won championships in the U-17 division at the Silva Lanes in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Strike Gold Lanes in Pojoaque, New Mexico, and the Bowl El Paso Lanes in El Paso, Texas. She also earned third place and bowled a perfect game at the Holiday Lanes in Albuquerque.
On the Central New Mexico United States Bowling Congress Association (CNMUSBCA) circuit, Alvarez placed first at the 2019 Youth Division I Championship. She also served as a youth director and the state delegate for the CNMUSBCA.
Alvarez dominated the New Mexico United State Bowling Congress (NMUSBC) circuit as she placed first at the 2018-19, 2017-18 and 2016-17 NMUSBC Pepsi Tournaments. She also took first at the 2017-18 and 2015-16 NMUSBC Youth State Tournaments. Alvarez was awarded the NMUSBC Youth Performance Award in the 2017-18 season.
