Sugar Bowl Release
NEW ORLEANS – Former Tulane men's basketball head coach Perry Clark has been selected for induction to the Allstate Sugar Bowl's Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 2020 class.
Â
Clark becomes the second former Tulane men's basketball coach to be inducted, joining Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Cliff Wells (1945-63). Clark was inducted into the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008 as well as the Louisiana Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Â
Clark led the Green Wave for 11 seasons from 1989-2000, compiling a 185-145 (.561) record to make him the second-winningest head coach in program history. He led to Tulane to six 20-win seasons, seven postseason appearances (3 NCAA, 4 NIT) and won the Metro Conference championship in 1992. Recipient of the 1992 Frank Iba National Coach of the Year Award from the United States Basketball Writers' Association, he was a two-time Metro Conference Coach of the Year (1991, 1992).
Â
Tulane notched first round victories in each of their three trips to the NCAA Tournament with wins over St. John's in 1992, Kansas State in 1993 and BYU in 1995. Clark remains the only coach in program history to direct the Green Wave to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Tulane went to the NIT four times (1994-96-97-2000), reaching the Final Four and a trip to Madison Square Garden in New York in 1996.
Â
Clark coached 12 all-conference selections, including six first-team choices, during his tenure, while Anthony Reed (1990), Kim Lewis (1991) and Pointer Williams (1992) claimed consecutive Metro Conference Freshman of the Year honors under his tutelage.
Â
The Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee began in 1957 when James Collins spearheaded a group of sports journalists to form a sports awards committee to immortalize local sports history. For 13 years, the committee honored local athletes each month. In 1970, the Sugar Bowl stepped in to sponsor and revitalize the committee, leading to the creation of the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1971, honoring 10 legends from the Crescent City in its first induction class. While adding the responsibility of selecting Hall of Famers, the committee has continued to recognize the top amateur athlete in the Greater New Orleans area each month – the honors enter their 64th year in 2020. To be eligible, an athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region.
