Tulane COED Sailing Advances to the Final Round of the Atlantic Coast Championship
Oct 10, 2021 | Sailing
NEW LONDON, Connecticut – The Tulane University COED sailing team concluded competition in the First Round of the Atlantic Coast Championship Sunday afternoon and finished ninth with 297 points.
Â
Tulane's ninth place finish propelled the Green Wave to the Atlantic Coast Championship in Boston in two weeks.
Â
"We had our sights set pretty high this weekend and while we are a little disappointed to come in ninth, we are also pretty thankful to finish where we finished," head coach Charles Higgins said. "It was a very difficult fleet. The venue and the conditions were very tough as well."
Â
The top nine teams of the First Round of the Atlantic Coast Championship advance to the finals. The Green Wave edged out Bowdoin which finished 10th with 302 points.
Â
"The finals will hands down the hardest regatta outside of the national championship itself that we will sail all year," Higgins said. "In order to be the best, you have to compete against the best and we certainly wanted to be in that final field. Overall we are still very happy with how it went."
Â
Day one on Saturday featured races one through nine, while Sunday's conclusion was highlighted by races 10-17.
Â
The Green Wave had to battle back to the ninth position after dropping to as low as 10th earlier in the day, but we were able to secure the final bid to the finals in the very last race thanks to a strong performance by Gillian Perrell and Thad Lettsome.
Â
"I really came down to Thad and Gillian having to match what the sailers from Bowdoin were looking to do," Higgins said. "At the end of the day Thad and Gillian did exactly what we needed them to do."
Â
Cameron Giblin and Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez raced in the A Division for Tulane. Tulane's trip to the Atlantic Coast Championship featured 18 teams. Ten of those teams were ranked in the Top 20 nationally.
Â
The wind started out North to Northeast and then persistently moved right to East to Northeast. The wind strength ranged from 5-14 knots with most of the wind on the first half of the course and gradually diminished as the fleet sailed to the weather mark. In addition, there was considerable chop and rolling waves moving in from the Southeast with calm waters at the windward mark.Â
