Tulane Wins Double-Overtime Thriller Over TCU
Nov 17, 2021 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – A career night from redshirt senior Moon Ursin propels the Tulane University women's basketball team to a thrilling, double-overtime 88-78 victory over TCU Wednesday inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave moves to 3-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
Ursin led four players who posted double digits for Tulane scoring a career-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting. The Destrehan, Louisiana, native was also part of a trio that each recorded a double-double in the contest. Krystal Freeman tallied 15 points to go along with 12 rebounds, while Mia Heide scored a career-high 14 points of her own and pulled down 13 rebounds. Redshirt junior Dynah Jones ended just two assists shy of making it four players with a double-double as she finished with 19 points and eight assists.
As a team, Tulane held TCU to just 33 percent shooting, including 28 percent from beyond the arc. The Green Wave connected at a 38 percent clip from the field for the game and controlled the glass outrebounding the Horned Frogs 65-50.
The Green Wave started the night off with a hot hand, going on a 7-2 run over the Horned Frogs and never allowed the momentum to shift. Tulane shot 50 percent from the field in the first quarter with most of its damage coming inside on 12 points in the paint to help the Wave hold a 19-14 advantage at the first break.
In the second quarter, both teams struggled to get the ball to drop with the Green Wave shooting just 30 percent from the field and the Horned Frogs slightly better at 33.3 percent. The advantage, however, would go to Tulane as they dominated the paint on both ends of the floor outscoring TCU 18-8 inside the paint and posting a 17-8 rebound advantage.
Ursin led the Olive and Blue with 11 first half points as Tulane took a 37-27 lead into the locker room.
TCU dominated the start of the third as they opened with 11 unanswered points to take the lead. Tulane would see their first points of the second half midway through the quarter on a triple from Ursin to spark the offense. The Green Wave traded buckets with the Horned Frogs the remainder of the quarter, but still entered the final 10 minutes of regulation with a one-point lead.
The battle ensued in the fourth quarter with TCU knotting the score five times. The end of regulation came down to the charity stripe as both teams made just enough crucial free throws to keep the pressure on the opponent. The Horned Frogs made the final free throw of the quarter with 0.1 on the clock to send the game to overtime tied 66-66.
The first points of overtime would go to TCU, but Tulane would answer back quickly sinking a pair of free throws. Trading blows once again the teams found themselves tied at 74 at the end of the first overtime period.
Back-to-back threes by Ursin and Jones put Tulane in control to start the second overtime. Tulane found an extra gear in second extra period outscoring TCU 14-4 to seal the deal for an 88-78 win for the Green Wave.
Tulane will look to improve to 4-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season as it hosts the University of South Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 20, inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be aired live on ESPN+.
