
Tulane Men’s Basketball Outlasts Southeastern, 70-67

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane University men's basketball team won its 2021-2022 season opener on Tuesday, as it defeated Southeastern Louisiana University, 70-67 inside at the Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Newcomer Jalen Cook led the team in scoring as he poured in a career-high 28 points. Seventeen of Cook's 28 points came in the first half alone. Cook's scoring performance smashed his previous high of 11.
Jaylen Forbes, Tylan Pope and DeVon Baker also finished in double figures, as they netted 11, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Forbes' double-digit performance was the 20th of his career. Baker also hit a milestone performance, as he scored in double figures for the 60th time in his collegiate career.
Tulane outshot Southeastern 44-31 percent and held a 41-35 rebounding advantage on the glass. Pope paced the Green Wave on the glass as he tied a career high with 13 rebounds.
In the first half, the Green Wave held a nine-point lead with just under 10 minutes to go until the break. Five minutes later, the Lions trimmed Tulane's lead to two with just under five minutes until halftime.
Tulane held a 31-30 halftime lead and limited the Lions to just 18.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Coming out of the break, Southeastern opened up a five-point advantage at the 16:01 mark of the second half. The Green Wave would storm back in a big way, as they went on a 13-0 run to open up a 47-39 lead with 12:05 to go in the contest.
Although Tulane did not trail for the remainder of the game, Southeastern remained within striking distance for the final stretch of the game. The Lions cut the Green Wave's lead to within one with 4:58 to go in the game.
SLU had one last shot to tie the game, as it had the ball with 12 seconds remaining, but a 3-point attempt by SLU's Gus Okafor hit the top of the backboard to give the Green Wave the win as time expired.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, as it welcomes Southern University to Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 11:30 a.m. and will be aired on ESPN+. Fans can also listen to the game live on 104.1 FM.
