Dec 5, 2021 | Women's Basketball
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Tulane University women's basketball team falls 70-63 in a back-and-forth battle against Miami on Sunday in the Miami Holiday Classic. The difference in the contest was ultimately the charity stripe as the Hurricanes nearly doubled the attempts of the Green Wave leading to a 15-7 difference in made free throws.
Leading the way for the Green Wave was Krystal Freeman as she posted her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Pineville, Louisiana, native also surpassed Terry Johnson on the all-time scoring list at Tulane to move into 10th place. She has 1,375 points during her career in Olive and Blue.
Mia Heide was the only other Tulane player to finish in double figures as she had 11 points and two rebounds. Miami, Florida, native, Arsula Clark, finished one point shy of a double-double tallying 10 assists to go with her nine points.
Clark put the Green Wave on the board first with a corner three to open the contest. Tulane and the Hurricanes would then battle back and forth trading baskets with the Wave eventually pushing its lead out to as many as seven. Miami closed the opening quarter with a 9-1 run in the final two minutes to leave Tulane with a one-point deficit at 17-16 after the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Canes stretched their advantage out to eight points, but that did not deter the Green Wave. Tulane responded with 10 unanswered points over the next four and a half minutes to reclaim the lead. Back-to-back triples from Kaila Anderson and Irina Parau tied the game at 26 before Moon Ursin converted a fastbreak layup to put the Wave in front 28-26. After Miami knotted the score again, Dynah Jones knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to send Tulane into the locker room leading 30-28.
The second half began with Tulane and Miami trading buckets until the Hurricanes scored nine unanswered point to take a six-point advantage midway through the third quarter. The Green Wave brought the score back to a tie twice in the quarter. Ursin first tied the score at 43 with four straight points in transition. Parau knotted it up two minutes later at 45 before Anderson knocked down her second triple of the contest with 24 seconds left to put Tulane up 48-47 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to be the difference maker for the Canes. Miami played its best 10 minutes in the final quarter as it shot 58.3 percent from the field and sank 12-of-14 free throws. The quarter started with four straight points for Tulane as Clark knocked down a free throw and Freeman buried a three to put the Wave up 52-47. However, Miami responded with a 15-2 run over the next seven minutes. Tulane did not back down, but the solid free throw shooting by the Hurricanes stifled any Green Wave comeback. The Wave dropped to Miami by a final score of 70-63.
The Green Wave will be back at home in the Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse for a matchup with Troy on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be aired on ESPN+.
