Tulane Places Second in Charleston Team Race

NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane University sailing team finished second in the Charleston Spring Team Race at the College of Charleston on Sunday.

After winning six of their 10 races on Saturday, Tulane won four of their five races today to finish the weekend with an overall record of 10-5. The College of Charleston's Cougars 1 team came out on top with a record of 13-2.

"It was good to finish the regatta strong today," Tulane head coach Charles Higgins said. "It was very windy and the team sailed well, and our fitness was certainly an advantage. We only dropped the race to Charleston, and it was a battle from start to finish."

The wind was clocked between 10 and 20 knots and grew throughout the day, forcing the teams to call off the final four and just do one more round of five team races.

Tulane's team today consisted of the skipper-crew pairings of Marcus Huttunen and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan, Cameron Giblin and Kit Stoll, and Thad Lettsome and Gillian Perrell/Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez.

"Overall, we are very pleased with our performance this weekend, and we'll be ready to get back at it next week," Higgins said.

Tulane's solid performance against quality competition should provide the team confidence heading into the heart of their spring schedule.

Up Next, Tulane travels to compete in a regatta at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Friday, March 26.
