No. 25 Men's Tennis Collects 4-3 Road Win at USF
Apr 2, 2021 | Men's Tennis
TAMPA, Fla. - The 25th-ranked Tulane men's tennis team picked up its fourth straight win and defeated American Athletic Conference foe and No. 37 USF, 4-3, on Friday afternoon.
"It was a great match against a super tough conference foe on the road," director of tennis and head coach Mark Booras said. "I'm very proud of the fight and focus the guys showed today throughout doubles and singles to come up with a big road win."
Tulane (11-5) got the afternoon started with a dominant effort in doubles, jumping out to a commanding lead on all three courts. Akos Kotorman and Billy Suarez cruised to a 6-3 win on court two over Chase Ferguson and Manuel Goncalves, before Luis Erlenbusch and Fynn Kuenkler took down Ivan Yatsuk and Alvin Tudorica, 6-4, on court three to clinch the doubles point.
The Wave extended the advantage to 2-0 when Erlenbusch collected a 6-3, 6-4 win on court three against Yatsuk, but USF (11-7) was close behind with a straight set win on court five. The Bulls drew even, 2-2, with another straight-set win on court two, but freshman Rafael de Alba collected a 7-6, 6-0 win on court six to reclaim the momentum and push USF to the brink.
Tulane was able to clinch a short while later when 29th-ranked Hamish Stewart closed out a three-set win over the 58th-ranked Ferguson, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, on court one to clinch. The win marked Stewart's fifth over a nationally-ranked opponent this spring.
Up next, Tulane heads to Orlando to face 13th-ranked UCF on Sunday, April 4. The match is scheduled for noon (CT) at the USTA National Training Center.
