Tulane Sailing Pulls Off Saturday Sweep
Apr 24, 2021 | Sailing
AUSTIN, Texas — The Tulane University sailing team swept its conference championship races on Saturday in Texas.
"Today was a tremendously successful performance for the Wave across the board," Tulane sailing head coach Charles Higgins said. "We opened the day with the coed championship, and we got off to a comfortable lead, taking first and second in four of the first five races. After race 6, it was great to be able to sub in Caelan [Watts] and Tigs [Katie Cartiglia] to close out the championship for us."
Â
In the coed championship fleet race, Tulane posted a 29, defeating the University of Texas, Texas A&M at Galveston and Loyola University New Orleans. The A team, skippered by Cameron Giblin and crewed by Lydia Brown, scored a ten, the lowest of any team.
Â
In the women's fleet race, Tulane scored a 23, defeating the University of Texas and Loyola University New Orleans. Tulane's B division boat led the way, scoring a nine. The boat was skippered by Gillian Perrell and crewed by Abigail Borggaard.Â
"The women's championship we knew might be a bit tighter of a battle," Higgins said. "We've been battling some injuries recently, and had to lean on our freshmen a little bit. Gillian and Abi stepped up in a big way and led our B boat to a narrow victory over Mia and Alanna in A division. Together they sailed a really solid series to take home the second championship of the day."
Â
In the team race championship, Tulane posted an impressive record of 9-0. The Green Wave took down the University of Texas, Texas A&M at Galveston, and Loyola University New Orleans. Tulane's three boats were made up of skippers William Keenan, Cameron Giblin, and Caelan Watts. The crews were Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez, Lydia Brown, Gillian Perrell, Isabella Bentz and Cartiglia.
"The team race championship was arguably our best sailed event of the day," Higgins said. "The team simply started strong and never let up. We stayed disciplined with our assignments and never panicked when races started tight. We trusted our abilities and our teammates and deservedly went undefeated. Now it's on to Annapolis next month. We'll use this weekend as a springboard and hope to be at peak performance when it matters most."
