COVID-19 Reflection: Bowling's Veronica Petrinec
Jun 3, 2021 | Women's Bowling
COVID-19 brought many many challenges to the Tulane Athletics Family. Each team and individual faced obstacles no one had ever seen before. Each week Tulane will visit with one athlete from one of the Green Wave's teams to reflect on the pandemic.Â
How did you spend your time/what kept you busy over quarantine?
"During quarantine I kept myself busy by getting a puppy and working! My boxer/lab mix is the greatest thing that came out of quarantine. His name is Bentley, and I spent most of my time training him and working at a criminal defense office as a legal intern."
What have you learned about yourself after the pandemic?
"I learned that I am capable of being very self disciplined when I put my mind to it. Online class was something I never saw myself being able to handle, until quarantine. I was able to keep up with my fitness, spend time with family and have an internship. Quarantine showed me that my self determination and disciple can take me to great places!"
What did you learn about your sport during the pandemic?
"My sport was unfortunately put on hold because bowling centers were closed for a majority of the time. However, I learned at lot about mental training during the pandemic. I took time reading books on mental game and leadership and I really learned how to work that into my sport."
What did you learn about your team during the pandemic?
"I learned that my team had similarities to myself in a way I never saw before. The self-determination and discipline was something that is hard to see during the year when we all are on the same set athletic schedule, as well as class schedule (sometimes). Quarantine showed me that my teammates were just as committed as me and were following all COVID precautions to help us get back on the lanes."
How did your coach help the team through the pandemic?
"Our coach helped us through the pandemic drastically by being really understanding with COVID concerns, while also being understanding with how COVID effected us all individually. Some of us were not able to practice for 5-6 months because of the pandemic. This pushed us back in our progress with bowling; however, Coach Vietch was patient and helped us get through it little by little in our practices."
What changed about your sport during this season?
"This season our sport changed in many ways, some tournaments more than others. The biggest change I think was not having any spectators. Bowling is not a huge arena, like bigger sports, but the difference in the atmosphere not having spectators still showed and was something that took adjusting too."Â
What is a hobby you picked up during the pandemic?
"Not sure if this qualifies for a hobby, but I picked up better self-care practices. Things like walks with Bentley, laying out by the water with no phone and relaxing, and getting more sleep. Practicing these things helped me recharge and become more in touch with myself and what my body needs. When school started back up, I was able to implement more walks and better sleep and it helped me a lot this season."Â
How did Tulane Athletics administration help your team through the pandemic?
"Tulane athletics helped our team through the pandemic by allowing us to feel safe in our athletic setting. All the testing and COVID protocols made going to school, and competing during a pandemic a lot less stressful. Tulane Athletics also gave us the opportunity to compete, which really helped give some normality to life, as weird as that seems!"
