
Tulane Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Bout at SMU

DALLAS – A buzzer-beater from Arsula Clark gave Tulane women's basketball (8-6, 0-3) an extra five minute against Southern Methodist (9-6, 3-0), but the Green Wave was unable to complete the come from behind victory as it fell 67-62 on the road Saturday. The Green Wave scored the first three points in the extra period, but the Mustangs finished with the final eight as Tulane suffered its third-straight American Athletic Conference loss to open league play.
Clark paced the scoring for the Green Wave finishing with 18 points along with six rebounds and five assists. The redshirt senior scored 11 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Mia Heide followed in the scoring column with 16 points and six rebounds in the contest. The Austin, Texas, native led the Tulane attack in the first half scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting before hitting the locker room. Redshirt senior Kaila Anderson provided energy off the bench to round out the top scorers for the Green Wave as she finished with 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Both teams came out knocking down shots in the opening frame as Tulane and SMU traded buckets through the first five minutes of the quarter. Anderson brought a spark off the bench with a pair of three-pointers with the second delivering the Green Wave its largest lead of the quarter at 21-15 with 44 seconds left. Heide led Tulane in the frame with eight points and a pair of rebounds as the Wave held a 21-17 advantage after one quarter.
After Dynah Jones got the first basket of the second quarter, the Mustangs responded with six unanswered to tie the game at 23. That tie did not last long as Moon Ursin drained a triple from the corner one minute later to put Tulane back in front. SMU bounced back to briefly take the lead, but the Green Wave finished the half on a 5-1 run to hit the locker room with a 31-28 lead.
Momentum turned the way of the Mustangs in the third quarter as Tulane shot just 30.8 percent from the field in the frame while SMU hit at a 40.0 percent clip. Tulane was outscored 20-11 in the quarter sending the Green Wave into the final frame trailing 48-42.
Tulane chipped away in the fourth quarter cutting its deficit to one twice before Anderson knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the contest to knot the score at 55 with a 1:42 to play. SMU went back in front on the next possession, but Clark quickly tied the score again with 50 second left. The Miami, Florida, native came up clutch again spinning down the lane to bounce in a tough bucket at the buzzer and send the game to overtime tied at 59.
The first couple minutes of the extra period went the way of the Green Wave as Clark put Tulane up 62-59 with 2:44 remaining. Tulane went cold in the final two minutes of overtime as SMU scored the final eight points of the contest handing the Green Wave its third-consecutive AAC loss 67-62.
Up next, the Green Wave will travel to Houston to take on the Cougars on Monday, January 17. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will be aired live on ESPN+.
