No. 17 Bowling Begins The 2022-23 Season On Friday At The Rattler Classic
Oct 6, 2022 | Women's Bowling
New Orleans – The No. 17 ranked Tulane University bowling team is set to begin the 2022-23 season at the Rattler Classic from Oct. 7-9 in Pensacola, Fla. The tournament is being hosted by Florida A&M University at Strikerz starting at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and then 9:25 a.m. on Sunday.
"Adding this tournament to our schedule this season gives us the opportunity for the team to see their new bowling ball arsenals in a competitive environment," explained 12th-year head coach Hayley Veitch. "It will also help the freshmen familiarize themselves with collegiate bowling. The team has bonded well in the preseason and that will continue to strengthen as the team enjoys a little downtime at the beach and experiencing all that Pensacola has to offer. We are ready and excited to start the season!" Â Â
The Green Wave are one of eight teams that are invited to participate in the tournament along with Alabama State, Grambling State, Texas Southern, Emanuel College, Jackson State, Southern University and the host institution Florida A&M.
The first day of competition, Oct. 7, will be five (5) five-game Baker matches with total pins being the goal. In the qualifying rounds, teams will alternate lanes after each Baker game until the match is complete. The left lane is the starting lane.
The second day of the tournament, Oct. 8, is a format of five (5) traditional team games.
On the third day, Oct. 9, teams will complete in three rounds of match play in a playoff bracket. Each of the rounds in match play will be a best-of-seven baker match.
The playoff rounds will be seeded using overall total pin fall standings after the qualifying round (day one) is completed. The higher seed has the choice of starting lane for the first baker game with one exception. The exception is if the match goes to a single deciding Baker Game, the higher seed has the choice.
The first, second and third place teams will be awarded the team awards.
The five individuals that accumulate the highest pin fall totals during the traditional team games, will earn a position on the all-tournament team. The MVP award is given to the individual with the highest tournament average.
This year's Tulane roster features five returners in sophomore Katharina Mente, senior Jenica Baron, junior Morgan Gitlitz, senior Amelia Vasquez and junior Yarelis Alvarez. Joining the program are three newcomers in freshman Cassidy Williams, sophomore Sofiia Druchyna and freshman Mia Stolakis.
Next, the program returns home to host the Colonial Lanes Classic from Oct. 14-16 in Harahan at Colonial Lanes. Tulane plays in a total of 10 regular season tournaments this season. The regular season finishes for the Green Wave with the Southland Conference Bowling League Championships from March 24-26 in Rowlett, Texas. Last season, Tulane was defeated by eventual 2022 Southland Conference Bowling League champion Vanderbilt in the opening round of the double elimination tournament, beat eventual NCAA runner-up Stephen F. Austin in the second round before falling to NCAA Tournament-bound Arkansas State to end the team's run. Six of the eight schools in the conference were able to secure NCAA bids last season. The NCAA Championship Regionals will be played April 8-9 at a site that has yet to be announced. The NCAA Championships are being compete from April 14-15 in Las Vegas at the South Point Bowling Plaza.
Tulane's bowling team finished the 2022 season ranked No. 19 in RPI and had an overall record of 57-47. The program won the Southwest Intercollegiate Conference Tournament in the fall and qualified for a berth in the Intercollegiate Team Championships in the spring. The team saw Madison McCall named an Honorable Mention All-American by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA). It was the sixth straight year that Tulane has seen a member of its bowling team honored by the NTCA. The program also had seven individuals honored with places on the 2022 Academic Honor Roll for the Southland Conference (Crystal Singh, Veronica Petrinec, Baron, Vasquez, Gitlitz, Alvarez and Mente). The program also had two All-Conference performers as McCall was Second Team All-Southland Conference, while Mente was chosen for the All-Rookie Team. Additionally last season, Baron was chosen as the American Athletic Conference's Community Impact Award Recipient.
