College Station, Texas - The Tulane University cross country teams showed remarkable improvement from last year in finishing among the top-10 regionally this season at the 2022 NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Friday morning. The men's program placed fifth overall and saw Bradley Makuvire and Evans Kipchumba both earn All-Region selections. The women's team placed 10th and were led by Mackenzie Callahan's All-Region honor. Last season, the men's and women's programs both finished in last place in the regional.
"In regards to today, all progress is good progress so we certainly have to celebrate what this group has done this year in going from dead last in the regional last year to a top-five finish for the men and a top-10 finish for the women," explained Head Coach Adrian Myers. "Both of these accomplishments deserve to be celebrated within our program with the understanding that we as a group have likely shown more improvement than any other cross country program nationally in one year. The momentum is parabolic for what this group has done this year and I am happy with that. With all of that said, we did leave a lot on the table for what we can improve upon going forward. Some of our athletes really stepped up, while others didn't have great days. It is a long season and those ups and downs are to be expected at times. Certainly, as we roll forward as a program with our desires on being nationally ranked, contending for AAC Championships and making a run at an NCAA National Team title, we can't have those days, but the importance of today is that we showed ourselves what is possible in one year and what can happen when you multiple that going forward. The most important thing that we can do is create our identity of what it is and what it means to be a Green Wave Cross Country/Track & Field team member and what it requires to meet the standard of academic and athletic excellence. Individually, Bradley Makuvire punched his ticket to the NCAA Cross Country National Championships with the exclusive group of athletes that have done that. This is huge for Bradley to help put the Green Wave on a national stage and show what can be done in our program when a commitment is made. For me the performance of the meet was Evans Kipchumba being All-Region with arguable the best performance of his career to date. It was a great time to have it and I can't be more positive for that young man and what he has done in our program due to the commitment that he has made and the progress he has shown in only one year. On the women's side, I am very proud of Mackenzie Callahan and her being All-Region for the first time in her career. She was just shy of qualifying individually for the NCAA Championships in finishing 13th overall with a personal best to close out her athletic career in cross country. She will now turn her attention to getting to the national championship meet in track & field. She really ran a heck of a race. Sometimes in life we just come up just short. I am very happy with all the progress we have made this year as a group. You always want a little more, but that only comes about as competitors and always striving for bigger things for the program."
The men's team totaled 244 points to finish fifth in the 10k race. The only teams of the other 28 squads that finished above Tulane in the race were Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M and Arkansas State. Makuvire finished ninth overall with a 30:43.6 with an average pace of 4:56. Makuvire earned All-Region honors plus advanced to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Nov. 19. Evans Kipchumba also was an All-Region selection in finishing 21st among all 167 runners with time of 31:24.5 and average time of 5:03. Aaron Gilliam finished 48th with a 33.19.6 and an average pace of 5:12. Tucker Poshard finished 81st with a 33:25.7 and an average pace of 5:22. Arturs Lapins placed 85th with a 33:34.3 with an average pace of 5:24. Kyle Johnson finished 135th with a 34:54.6 and an average pace of 5:37. In total there were 167 runners that qualified and competed at the meet.
The women's team totaled 283 points to finish 10th in the 6k race of the 29 teams that competed. Mackenzie Callahan finished 13th overall with a personal record time of 20:51.4 and an average pace of 5:35. Sophia McNerney was 52nd with a 21:54.4 and an average pace of 5:52. Allie Nelson was 64th with a 22:06.8 and an average pace of 5:55. Harper Shaw was 75th with a 22:19.3 and an average pace of 5:59. Danna Diaz was 79th with a 22:27.7 and an average pace of 6:01. Lilian Grant was 87th with a 22:37.8 and an average pace of 6:04. In total there were 179 runners at the meet.
