Nov 17, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MOBILE, Ala. – A stellar shooting performance by sophomore Kyren Whittington helped Tulane University Women's Basketball roll past South Alabama 79-46 for its first road victory of the season on Thursday. Whittington converted at a 72.7 percent clip from the floor as she paced the strong shooting night for the Green Wave.
Two players finished in double figures for Tulane in the contest led by Whittington with a game-high 19 points. Freshman Amira Mabry poured in 11 points while adding seven rebounds. Rachel Hakes consistently found her teammates in rhythm as she dished out nine assists and added eight points of her own.
On the glass, Marta Galic led all players as she pulled down a career-best 12 boards to go with nine points. As a team, the Green Wave outrebounded the Jaguars 50-36.
Tulane came out firing early shooting a blazing 52.9 percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes. The Green Wave opened with a 9-0 scoring run in the first two and a half minutes and did not look back. Whittington was in rhythm from the start of the game as she poured in 10 points and knocked down a pair of threes to lead the Wave to a 21-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The second frame was more of the same for the Green Wave as Tulane scored 27 points on more hot shooting, 56.3 percent from the field. Whittington added nine more to her first half stat sheet to help Tulane take a 48-21 lead into the locker room.
The offense slowed down a bit in the third quarter, but the Wave battled hard defensively limiting the Jaguars to 37.5 percent shooting in the frame. The lead climbed to as many as 29 midway through the quarter before South Alabama got the final bucket to make the score 61-36 in favor of Tulane heading into the fourth.
The defense stayed stout, and the offense rebounded a bit to close the night as Tulane outscored the Jaguars in the final frame 18-10. Mabry tallied seven points in the fourth quarter as the Green Wave rolled to the 79-46 victory.
Up next, Tulane will return to Uptown to host Sam Houston on Sunday. The Green Wave and the Bearkats will square off inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.
