Nov 24, 2022 | Women's Basketball
CANCUN, Mexico –Tulane University Women's Basketball dropped its opening contest in the Cancun Challenge 60-82 to Northern Iowa on Thursday night. The Green Wave tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter after falling behind early but was unable to slow down the Panthers offense.
Two players scored in double figures for the Green Wave led by Dynah Jones with 18 points to go with five rebounds and a pair of steals. Irina Parau followed in the scoring column with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
The offense got off to a slow start for the Green Wave creating an early deficit in the first quarter. On the other end of the floor the Northern Iowa offense shot 52.6 percent in the frame as Tulane would trail 10-21 at the end of the first.
The Wave began building a rhythm on the offensive end of the floor in the second quarter by finishing strong around the rim. Jones scored five of Tulane's 16 points in the frame to send the Green Wave to the locker room trailing 26-39.
Tulane kept turning up the defensive intensity to start the second half. The Wave opened with a 7-0 scoring run by converting three straight steals into points. That run sparked Tulane to outscore the Panthers in the frame 24-22 and cut its deficit heading into the final quarter to 50-61.
The momentum did not stay in the Green Wave's favor in the fourth quarter as Northern Iowa continued to have success shooting beyond the arc. Tulane ultimately dropped the contest 60-82.
Up next, the Green Wave will play Central Michigan in its second contest in the Cancun Challenge. Tipoff between Tulane and the Chippewas is set for 8 p.m. CT from the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.
