Tulane Women’s Tennis Drops First Match of the Season to Alabama, 4-3
Feb 5, 2022 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's tennis team (3-1) came up just shy of its fourth-straight win to open the season as it fell to the Alabama Crimson Tide (5-0) on Saturday, 4-3. The Green Wave gave itself a chance to claim the match in singles competition, but ultimately ended short in a pair of third sets as Alabama went on to take the match.
"I couldn't be more proud of the way the team competed today," head coach Maria Brito said. "We need these kinds of matches to continue improving and growing. We will bounce back and get better. I am very excited to get back to work on Monday and get ready for two tough road conference matches."
In doubles play, Tulane got out to a solid start splitting the first two matches as the pairing of Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell picked up the first win of the day for the Wave. Battling in the first position of doubles Mackenzie Clark and Kristen Borland gave the Tide a run but were unable to come from behind as the doubles point went to Alabama.
Moving into singles competition Clark and Yelamanchili evened the score at 2-2 each picking up two-set victories. Alabama claimed the next two points in singles action to clinch the match, but Russell finished the day for the Green Wave with a hard-fought three-set win in a tiebreaker to make the final score 4-3 in favor of the Tide.
Tulane will be back in action for its first road test and American Athletic Conference match as it travels to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to face the Golden Hurricanes. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. CT.
