Tulane Drops Game One of the Pelican Cup 14-6
Mar 29, 2022 | Baseball
New Orleans showed why they are a series contender for the Southland Conference title, as they coasted to a lopsided win.
"We kind of seem to ebb and flow," head coach Travis Jewett said. "I don't feel like we came out ready to play the game."
Tulane was outhit 14-7 and didn't help themselves in the field, committing six errors. The last time a Tulane Baseball team had a six-error game was versus Pepperdine in 2004. The Green Wave defense has struggled for a large portion of the season, committing a total of 29 errors so far.
The Green Wave bullpen was busy all night, sending ten members to the hill, the most of any game this season. The Tulane staff in total threw 198 pitches. The staff had one of the most unproductive games of the season, as the Wave took a 4.32 ERA away from the game.
Graduate student right-hander Carter Robinson got the start for the Green Wave and gave up three runs, all earned in 2.0 innings of work. Robinson threw a fair amount, throwing 43 pitches, as he was hurt by an error and a quiet offense.Â
Lefty Kyle Khachadourian was on the bump for the Privateers and was clean through five innings of work. He struck out seven of the 19 batters he faced before exiting in the fifth.
New Orleans put crooked numbers on the board in six of the eight innings they took to the plate. Â
On a night where Green Wave highlights were scarce, Luis Aviles got the fans out of their seats not once but twice. He sent a solo homer into the parking lot in the top of the sixth and a two-run homer in the top of the eighth, accounting for 3 RBI. Simon Baumgardt and Trevor Minder claimed the other three RBI with a two-run homer and a solo home run respectively.
It wasn't the Green Wave's night, but the series is still up for grabs.Â
UP NEXT: Tulane will head to Memphis to open AAC play on Friday. Grant Siegel, Dylan Carmouche and Michael Massey will take the hill for the Wave this Friday through Sunday.
