Tulane Women’s Sailing Finishes Seventh at the ICSA National Championship
Apr 24, 2022 | Sailing
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Tulane University sailing women's team finished seventh out of the 12 teams competing at the ICSA Women's Team Race National Championship on Sunday. The Green Wave posted a 5-6 overall record over the weekend in the regatta.
"While we only had one race remaining, it proved to be exceptionally important today," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We went into it knowing a win would move us up to 7th overall, but a loss would drop us back to 9th. Fortunately, the ladies pulled out a very gritty win against Cornell to move us up the overall leaderboard."
Tulane entered the final day of the regatta with a 4-6 record before coming out on top in its final race against Cornell. The Wave's victory over the Big Red secured a seventh-place finish among the nation's top teams. Over the course of the event the Green Wave earned wins over six-seed Georgetown, eight-seed Cornell, nine-seed MIT, 11-seed South Florida, and 12-seed Michigan. Tulane was led on the waters of the Providence River by skippers Caroline Benson, Mia Hanes and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan along with crews Lydia Brown, Abigail Borggaard, Cam Farrah, Gillian Perrell, Essie Clifton, Lucy Spearman, Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez and Annie Richard.
The No. 2 seed Yale claimed the title at the ICSA Women's Team Race National Championship with a 13-3 overall record.
"This was a great season for us, and I'm very pleased with finishing 7th at the inaugural ICSA Women's Team Race Championship," Higgins said. "We know it was within our grasp to be on the podium this weekend, and we'll be fully prepared to achieve that goal next year. For now, it's on to preparing for the rest of our spring championships we'll be hosting in a little less than a month from now."
Up next, the Green Wave will host the ICSA Team Race Championships in New Orleans May 16-26.
