CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Tulane University women's tennis doubles team of Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell advanced to the 2022 NCAA Doubles Championship Round of 16 after defeating Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli from North Carolina State in two sets Tuesday. Yelamanchili and Russell won the first set over the Wolfpack duo 6-3 before punching their ticket to the next round with a 6-2 win in the second set.
"I couldn't be happier for Charlie and Lahari," head coach Maria Brito said. "This win means so much for them and the entire team. This is the first time since 2003 that a doubles team has made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. This has been an amazing experience for them and the wave is still rolling!"
Yelamanchili and Russell advanced to face Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova of Texas A&M in the Round of 16. Goldsmith and Makarova defeated Miyuka Kimoto and Polina Kozyreva from Syracuse in the opening round.
In the first set Yelamanchili and Russell won back-to-back games after dropping the first game to take an early 2-1 lead. After Rajecki and Rencheli reclaimed the lead 3-2, the Tulane duo won four of the final games in the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Games went back and forth to begin the second set with Yelamanchili and Russell landing tied with Rajecki and Rencheli through the first four games at 2-2. The tie did not last long, however, as the Green Wave pair got on a roll winning the next four games to take the set 6-2 and win the match 6-3, 6-2.
The match between Yelamanchili and Russell and the Texas A&M duo will be played Wednesday at the Kahn Outdoor Tennis Complex on the University of Illinois campus.
