Volleyball Drops First Match of the Season

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Tulane University volleyball team (0-1) started its season with a loss to the Lions of Southeastern on Friday on the opening day of action at the Katrinka Crawford Invitational. The two-tournament is being held in McDonald Gym on the campus of Lamar University in Beaumont.
The Green Wave fought hard but couldn't break through the Lions' defense, dropping three straight sets after grabbing the first one (25-21, 26-24, 25-16 and 25-22).
The Green Wave hit .176 as a group with 53 kills. The Lions (1-0) struck early, attacking at a .205 clip as a team.
Junior Mackenzie Martin led the Green Wave with 12 kills and hit .189. Following closely was Kayla Kaiser with 11 kills and Melissa Kolurbasi with nine.
Setters Kate Van Houten and Ava Derbes did their part moving the ball with 36 assists. Van Houten (22 assists, 17 digs) and Martin (12 digs to go with the aforementioned 12 kills) each posted the team's first double-doubles of 2022.
Libero Sophia Ervanian carried the defense with 17 digs.
Set one was a battle from start to finish. Then Wave outkilled the Lions 17-10 totaling a .167 hitting percentage. The set consisted of 13 ties and six different lead changes, the last coming by the Green Wave when the score was 17-all.
Set two was another close battle with the final being 26-24. The Lions went on a four-point run to push their advantage out to a 14-9 edge. A handful of kills from Amarachi Osuji and Lizzy Stefanov put the Wave right back on track, 15-14. Tulane pulled back in front and snared a three-point advantage (21-18) before Southeastern won eight of the set's last 11 points.
Set three was tough for the Green Wave, hitting .065 with only 10 kills and eight errors. The Lions went up two sets to one with the 25-16 finish.
The final set was a close one (25-22). Tulane had 13 kills in 36 attempts.
Tulane returns to action tomorrow for two matches, squaring off with Prairie View A&M at 10 a.m. and host Lamar at 4 p.m.
