Tulane Earns Third at Green Wave Invitational After Loss to Ohio

NEW ORLEANS -Â The Tulane University volleyball team (3-3)Â finished their first home tournament of the year with a loss to the Bobcats of Ohio University on Saturday. The Green Wave finished third in the Green Wave Invitational that was held at Avron B. Fogleman Arena inside the Devlin Field house.

The Green Wave fought hard but couldn't break through the Bobcat's defense, dropping the first two sets, grabbing the third to an untimely loss in the fourth (25-23, 25-21, 20-25 and 25-10).

The Green Wave hit .256 as a group with 45 kills. The Bobcats (3-2) struck early, attacking at a .345 clip as a team.

Junio Kayla Kaiser led the Green Wave with 3 kills and hit .435. Following closely was Melissa Kolurbasi with 10 (.206) and Mackenzie Martin with nine (.269).
Setter Kate Van Houten did her part moving the ball with 37 assists. Van Houten also added 10 digs to her line to grab her second double-double of the season.

Libero Jillian Dits carried the defense with 13 digs. A highlight of the game was the blocking. Tulane out blocked Ohio eight to five. The blocking game was led by Skyler Bumpers who had 4.0.

Set one was a battle from start to finish. The Wave had 12 kills and an ace while the Bobcats killed 20 balls and an ace. Tulane hit .265 in the opening set of the contest while Ohio landed .333. The set consisted of 13 ties and four different lead changes, the last coming by the Green Wave when the score was 23-all and the Bobcats had two back-to-back kills to take the set 25-23.

The highlights of set two were four aces and zero attacking errors from the home team. The lead changed a total of five different times and ultimately went to Ohio who scored six of the next eight points when the score was tied 19-all. Set two went final 25-21 to put Ohio up two sets to none.

Set three was the Green Wave's strongest offensive showing of the match with 15 kills and a .419 hitting percentage. The defense also picked up holing the Bobcats to a .222 clip, their lowest of the match, with only 13 kills. The Green Wave were able to get one back with a score of 25-20.

The final set was a tough one for Tulane who only managed 10 kills and racked up the highest number of attacking errors in a set thus far with 3. Tulane opened the final set with a kill from Martin, then spent the remainder of the match playing catch up. The 25-10 set score ended the match 3-1.
Tulane returns to action next weekend in Santa Clara, California for three matches before returning home for the remainder of non-conference play.
