NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane University volleyball team hits the road this weekend as it travels to California to play three matches inside the Leavey Center at the Santa Clara Invitational.
The Green Wave (3-3, 0-0 AAC) will first take on Fresno State (3-3, 0-0 Mountain West)Â on Friday at 5 p.m. before matching up against the University of Oklahoma (4-2, 0-0 Big 12) on Saturday at 4 p.m. Tulane and the host Broncos (3-3, 0-0 WCC) square off Sunday at noon.Â
Tulane fought hard and came out with a .500 record after its home opener in the Green Wave Invitational held at Avron B. Fogelman Arena inside the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave started the weekend strong with a victory over Howard University in its first match on Friday but dropped its second to Kansas City later that night. On Saturday, Tulane concluded its first home tournament of the year with a loss to the Bobcats of Ohio University. The Green Wave finished third overall in the tournament to end the weekend.Â
In week two, the Wave showed its talents. Some of the highlights from the weekend included senior Amarachi Osuji, who led the attack for Tulane in the first match, contributing 14 kills and 17.5 points. Osuji also had three solo blocks and a block assist. On the setting front, senior Kate Van Houten paced Tulane with 24 assists in the second match. In the last contest of the weekend, libero Jillian Dits carried the defense with 13 digs.Â
After Fresno State's first match against Charleston Southern (4-3), the Bulldogs were victorious. Then they dropped their next two matches against College of Charleston (2-4) and Rutgers (4-2) before rebounding against The Citadel (2-4) and Seattle (1-2), securing a pair of victories.Â
The University of Oklahoma grabbed three straight wins against Gonzaga (2-4), Iowa (2-3) and Florida International (0-6) to start its season. The Sooners' streak ended in the Luv International, suffering losses to Ball State (5-1) and Mississippi State (5-0), but came out with a victory in their last match against Lipscomb (2-4).
Santa Clara started the season with a win against Chattanooga (1-5) and then took two losses from Troy (2-4) and Georgia (6-1) to finish out the month of August. In September, the tables turned with the Broncos pulling out two wins against Wyoming (1-5) and Idaho (0-6), with one loss to Grand Canyon.
