
Strong Defense Leads Women’s Basketball to 72-38 Exhibition Victory Over Loyola

New Orleans – Kyren Whittington tallied a game-high 20 points to lead three double figure scorers for the Tulane women's basketball team in a thrilling 72-38 victory over Loyola University New Orleans on Monday in an exhibition matchup at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Whittington's 20 points came on 9-for-13 shooting from the field. She also had four steals and a pair of blocks. Kierra Middleton totaled 14 points plus four rebounds and four assists. Marta Galic tallied 10 points, five rebounds and two steals. Chiara Grattini picked up eight points and a team-high five assists. Irina Parau totaled seven points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Amira Mabry recorded six points and six rebounds. Lily Ba picked up three points and four rebounds. McKenzi Carter had a pair of points and rebounds plus three steals. Kaylah Rainey scored two points and had two assists.
Loyola was led by Caitlin Travis' and Sandra Cannady's eight points.
Tulane never trailed in this one as the team shot 48.3 percent from the field (29-for-60), 33.3 percent from three-point range (5-for-15) and 81.8 percent from the free throw line (9-for-11) The team's largest lead was 39 points late in the fourth quarter. The team also had a 40-31 advantage in rebounds, led 18-7 in assists plus had 15 steals and three blocks.
The Green Wave led 19-9 after the first quarter, extended the lead to 38-23 at the half and then blitzed Loyola to the tune of 34-15 in the final 20 minutes of game action for the resounding victory.
Next, Tulane opens the regular season with a home contest against Stetson on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. The program will host a total of eight non-conference games this season, including the Tulane Holiday Classic (Dec. 20-21) plus makes trips to Macon, Georgia to take on Mercer (Nov. 19), the Cayman Islands to participate in the Inaugural Women's Basketball Cayman Islands Classic (Nov. 24-25) to play against Virginia and Virginia Tech and to Springfield, Missouri to take on Missouri State (Dec. 1).
