
Tulane Opens SoCal Challenge by Hosting Sacramento State Friday Night

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University men's basketball will aim for its second consecutive 3-0 start to a season as it hosts Sacramento State as part of the SoCal Challenge on Friday inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
The game between the Green Wave and the Hornets is set to tipoff at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. Fans can also listen to the action live on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 104.1 The Spot with Paul Boron filling in for Corey Gloor or streaming on the Tulane Athletics App and The Varsity Network App.
This marks the third all-time meeting between Tulane and Sacramento State. Tulane won both previous meeting which were played in Uptown. The Wave won the last matchup 85-73 on January 26, 1995.
In its last time out, the Green Wave dominated the paint in its 85-64 victory over Northwestern State to begin the season 2-0 for the second-straight year. The Green Wave tallied 52 points in the paint and shot an impressive 51.8 percent from the field as a team against the Demons. Kevin Cross and Kolby King led the charge for the Wave with 23 and 20 points, respectively.
Cross earned selection to the American Athletic Conference honor roll after the first week of the season by averaging 20.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in the first two games of the season for Tulane. The Little Rock, Arkansas, product also averaged 5.5 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.5 steals in the 2-0 start for the Wave.
Four players are averaging double figures in scoring so far this season for the Green Wave. King leads the team with 21.0 points per game. The sophomore guard also became just the second player (Cross, 2022) since 2010 to score 20 or more points for Tulane in the first two games of the season. Cross is second on the team averaging 20.5 points per game followed closely by Collin Holloway at 19.0 point per game. Sion James rounds out the top scorers for the Wave so far averaging 12.0 points per game.
Through the first week of the 2022-23 season, Tulane leads the AAC at the charity stripe. The Green Wave leads the league in free throw percentage (83.6), free throws attempted per game (27.5), and free throws made per game (23.0). The team also ranks sixth nationally in free throw percentage and free throws made per game.
Sacramento State enters the matchup with a 1-2 record after defeating Pacific Union 128-66 in its home opener on Tuesday. The Hornets are led by a trio averaging double-digits in scoring with Zee Hamoda at 17.0, Duncan Powell at 16.3, and Brandon Betson at 13.0. Sacramento State features 11 newcomers alongside just four returning players from last season. The Hornets were selected to finish fourth in the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches' poll.
Following the matchup with the Hornets, the Green Wave will make its first road trip of the season to continue competition in the SoCal Challenge in San Juan Capistrano, California. Tulane will square off against Bradley on Monday, November 20, at 9:30 p.m. CT and then will face either Cal or UTEP on Wednesday, November 22. Both games in California will be aired on CBS Sports Network.
