
The Golden Hurricanes Take Down the Green Wave Despite Late Comeback Attempt

TULSA, OK- the Tulane volleyball team (6-23) encountered a determined Tulsa squad (15-14) on Friday evening, resulting in a hard-fought 3-1 defeat for the Green Wave.
Freshman sensation Avery Burks showcased her prowess with an impressive 15 kills, leading Tulane's offensive charge. Amarachi Osuji, Ilayda Demirtas, and Katherine Crosley contributed seven kills each, adding depth to the team's performance.
The match featured a robust defensive effort from Tulane, culminating in nine team blocks, spearheaded by the imposing presence of Orsula Staka, who notched seven assisted blocks. Lauryn Burrows and Osuji demonstrated their defensive prowess with 20 digs apiece, anchoring the Green Wave in the backcourt.
The first set began back and forth between the Green Wave and the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa struck first and the Green Wave had an answer to tie the score until the score was 4-4. The Golden Hurricane ended up going on a 7-0 run to take the lead and the momentum in the match. Tulane fell in the first set, 25-10.
The second set brought a much different story. Tulsa got on the board first but the Green Wave did not allow another run and kept in the set. The set consisted of eighteen ties, with Tulsa and Tulane trading the lead until the score was, 23-23. Tulsa was able to secure the last two points and claim the set 25-23.
The third set began like the first two consisting of multiple ties until the score was, 5-5. The Green Wave went on a 4-0 scoring run to gain the lead and the momentum in the set. Tulane kept their dominance and momentum and led for the remainder of the set. Despite a late comeback attempt from the Golden Hurricane, Tulane forced a fourth set and took set three, 25-23.
In the fourth set, after the score was tied at 3-3, Tulsa gained the lead and kept it for the first part of the set. When Tulsa was leading 9-5, the Green Wave was able to score four unanswered points to tie the set back. The back-and-forth play continued until the set was tied 15-15. Tulsa ended up going on a 4-0 scoring run to take the lead and the momentum. Tulsa took the set and the match, 3-1.
Tulane looks ahead to redemption, gearing up for a rematch against the Golden Hurricane on Sunday at 1:00 PM in what marks their final road match of 2023.
