
Women’s Basketball Playing In the Cayman Islands Classic This Week

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands – Tulane's women's basketball team (3-1) is traveling for the Thanksgiving Break and will play in the Cayman Islands Classic from Nov. 24-25. The team will face off against Virginia (3-1) on Friday at 10 a.m. and then takes on No. 9 nationally ranked Virginia Tech (3-1) on Saturday at 10 a.m. Both games will be shown live on FloHoops while Paul Boron has the radio call on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
Last time out, Tulane defeated the Mercer Bears on Nov. 19 by a 64-58 score in Macon, Georgia. The program had four players reach double figures with both Hannah Pratt and Marta Galic getting 15 points. Pratt and Galic also tied for the team lead with eight rebounds each. Irina Parau tallied 13 points and four rebounds. Kyren Whittington totaled 11 points, five rebounds and two steals. Kaylah Rainey led the squad with her five assists. The Green Wave were able to out rebound the Bears 42-32 and also hit 25 free throws in 32 attempts (78.1 percent). The team trailed at the end of the first, second and third quarters, but rallied in the fourth. The win evened Tulane's all-time record against Mercer although it was the first game between the schools since 1983.
Following the second week of basketball action from Nov. 13-19, Kyren Whittington was named to the AAC's Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 20 after averaging 15.5 points with five rebounds a game in leading Tulane to victories over Prairie View A&M (71-46) and Mercer (64-58). Whittington has scored in double figures in all four games this season.
Virginia lost its first game of the season to No. 25 Oklahoma by a 72-51 margin on Sunday after three wins to begin the campaign. The Cavaliers have been led by Camryn Taylor's average of 16.8 points per game. Taylor is also pulling in 6.3 rebounds per game. She is one of five players on Virginia that is averaging in double figures along with Kymora Johnson (12.5), Jillian Brown (10.9), London Clarkson (10.3) and Olivia McGhee (10.3). Brown is the team's leading rebounder at 9.0 boards per game.
Virginia Tech, who are ranked No. 9 nationally, are one of the premier programs in the country. The Hokies were a No. 1 seed in last season's NCAA tournament and made it all the way to the Final Four. Virginia Tech has started the season having won three of the first four games with their only loss being to No. 5 Iowa by an 80-76 score. Elizabeth Kitley is averaging a double-double to lead the team. She sports an average of 24.3 points per game and 10.8 rebounds a contest. Kitley also leads the team in blocks with 10. Georgia Amoore is tallying 16 points a game and also leads the team with her 36 assists (9.0 per game). Matilda Ekh gets 10.5 points a game.
Tulane is 3-0 all-time against Virginia with the last meeting being 2015. The Green Wave are 8-9 all-time against Virginia Tech with the last meeting being in 1995. Tulane is 35-54 all-time against current schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The program, when it faces Virginia Tech, is looking to win its first game over a ranked opponent since 2011. The Green Wave's last game against a ranked team was against then No. 11 LSU last season. Coach Stockton is 18-21 all-time against current schools in the ACC since starting at Tulane.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
Next, Tulane keeps the road trip going and travels to Springfield, Missouri to take on Missouri State on Friday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m.
