Tulane Wins Double-Overtime Thriller Over Furman, 117-110

NEW ORLEANS – Late game heroics helped Tulane University men's basketball (7-2) survive a double-overtime thriller 117-110 over Furman (5-6) on Thursday night in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave counted on clutch free throws from Kevin Cross to force both overtimes before Jaylen Forbes and the deep ball took over the second overtime.
With the win, Tulane improves to 7-2 overall and remains undefeated at home this season with 5-0 mark at home.
The Green Wave shot a season-best 54.5 percent from beyond the arc and made a season-high 12 threes against the Paladins. The Wave shot it well from the floor as well connecting at a 55.9 percent clip to record its seventh game this season with a field goal percentage above 50 percent.
Cross highlighted the night of big performances for the Green Wave as he recorded the first triple-double for Tulane since 1996. The junior forward finished the game with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. Cross also added a career-high six steals in 47 minutes on the floor. The last player to record a triple-double for the Wave was Rayshard Allen who posted 18 points, 11 boards, and 11 assists in a 92-73 win over Lafayette on December 28, 1996.
Alongside Cross, two more player scored over 20 points for Tulane while six total players finished in double figures. Forbes led the Green Wave with 26 points including seven made three-pointers to go with five rebounds and five assists. Sion James finished the night with 21 points, two assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Collin Holloway notched his first career double-double posting 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Wave. Tre' Williams tallied 14 points and three steals in his third start of the season. Rounding out the top performers for Tulane was Kolby King with 13 points off the bench.
Tulane opened the contest with intensity on both ends of the floor as both teams traded baskets over the first few minutes. Despite exchanging the lead six times through the first half the Wave held the advantage for more than 17 minutes. Tulane built its largest advantage after a 15-6 run to go up 45-30 with 1:11 left before taking a 47-35 lead into the half.
Holloway and Forbes each tallied double figures in the first half with 14 and 11 points, respectively. As a team, the Green Wave shot 53.8 percent and sank five three-pointers in the opening frame.
In the second half Tulane maintained its double-digit advantage until Furman mounted a run following the under-eight media timeout. The Paladins chipped away to pull within four with four minutes left before taking their first lead of the second half at 87-85 with under a minute to play. The Wave and the Paladins went back-and-forth over the next few possessions until JP Pegues hit a three to put Furman up 92-89 with under a second remaining.
Without a timeout left James hit Cross on a three-quarter court pass setting the forward up to draw a foul on his three-pointer as time expired. Cross came up clutch for the Green Wave sinking all three free throws to send the game to overtime tied 92-92.
In the first overtime period Tulane and Furman exchanged the lead five times with neither team leading by more than two points. The Green Wave scored the final point of the first overtime from the charity stripe again as Cross knocked down a free throw to tie the game at 99-99.
Forbes took charge in the second overtime as he drained a three on three consecutive possessions for Tulane to put the Wave up 110-108 with 2:24 left. King followed with a triple of his own on the next possession to push the advantage to five before the Green Wave closed out the thrilling victory 117-110.
Up next, Tulane will host in-state foe Southern in Uptown on Saturday, December 16. Tipoff between the Green Wave and the Jaguars is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
