Feb 19, 2023 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – The Tulane University Baseball team, (0-3) lost a barn burner pitch duel 1-0 to the University of California Irvine (3-0) on Sunday. The game marked the third of the opening weekend series between the two clubs.Â
Â
The pitching was nothing short of spectacular from both sides, but especially for the Green Wave. The campaign was led by right-hander Ricky Castro who in his debut for the Wave only gave up two hits and one run, not earned, and two walks in 5.2 innings. The highlight of his performance was the nine forced ground outs. For perspective the Green Wave were only able to muster up six on Friday and eight on Saturday.
Â
The relief came in the form of Gavin Smith, Michael Fowler and Michael Lomardi. They worked a combined 2.1 innings no runs on no hits with only two walks in 36 pitches.
Â
The Green Wave offense was productive but untimely. The Olive and Blue walked away with seven hits and two walk drawn. The kicker coming in the form of strike outs (13) and men left on base (9).
Â
The lone run scored in the game came in the bottom of the second. A fly out to center field scored the Anteater's designated hitter Myles Smith. Smith's run was unearned after he advances from second to third on a Tulane error.
