Green Wave Drops AAC Battle at Wichita State
Feb 9, 2023 | Women's Basketball
WICHITA, Ks. – Tulane University Women's Basketball (13-11, 3-8) dropped its fourth consecutive American Athletic Conference battle in a 61-69 defeat at Wichita State (14-10, 4-7) Thursday night. The Green Wave held the advantage from downtown, but the battle down low proved to be the difference as Tulane was outscored 18-36 in the paint and outrebounded 33-42.
Dynah Jones led all scorers in the contest with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor. Jones also added four rebounds and an assist to the stat sheet. Marta Galic and Kahia Warmsley finished in double figures as well each posting 11 points.
Three player scored double-figures for Wichita State led by Jane Asinde with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Trajata Colbert also posted a double-double for the Shockers with 20 points and 10 boards.
The Green Wave got the first bucket of the night and took an early 5-2 advantage before Wichita State scored the next eight points to claim the lead. The run by the Shockers did not deter the Wave as Jones and Warmsley knocked down jumpers in the final minute to pull within two, 14-16, at the end of the first quarter.
A pair of free throws from Jones tied it up at 16-16 just over one minute into the second, but the tie did not last long as the Shockers responded to build a double-digit lead. Tulane traded buckets with Wichita State down the stretch of the opening half, but a three in the final seconds for the Shockers sent the Wave to the locker room facing a 25-38 deficit.
Tulane came out of the break on the attack opening the second half with a 7-0 run before cutting the deficit down to as low as five halfway through the third. Buckets from Jones and Warmsley once again closed the frame to cut the score to 43-50 in favor of the Shockers headed into the fourth.
A three-pointer by Warmsley with 6:11 left to play pulled the Wave with six, 50-56, but Tulane was unable to string together stops in the closing minutes. The Green Wave ultimately fell by a final score of 61-69.
Up next, the Green Wave will look to bounce back in a road challenge at Tulsa on Sunday. Tipoff between Tulane and the Golden Hurricane is set for 1 p.m. CT.
