Baseball Records Second Win with 14-6 Thrashing of Sacramento State
Mar 5, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Tulane Baseball scored in every inning but the ninth en route to a 14-6 demolition of Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Â
The win gave the Green Wave (2-10) its second victory of the season and the Hornets fell to 6-4.
Â
Tulane starter Ricky Castro (2-1), who has both wins on the mound for the team thus far, hurled five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks. The relief trio of Blake Mahmood, Chandler Welch and Michael Lombardi went the rest of the way, whiffing six more batters, while giving up a run, hit and one free pass.
Â
Sacramento State pitcher Cooper Rons (1-1) suffered the loss in relief of starter Evan Gibbons. Tulane torched the duo for 11 of its 14 runs by way of 11 hits.
Â
Green Wave shortstop Gavin Schulz led the way with four RBI and third baseman Simon Baumgardt drove in three. Right fielder Brady Hebert and second baseman Chase Engelhard both had three hits and scored three runs.
Â
Tulane jumped on top early with four runs in the first three innings on RBI by first baseman Brady Marget, catcher Seth Beckstead, a groundout by Hebert and a sacrifice bunt by Engelhard.
Â
The Hornets chipped away at that advantage and pulled to within one run before Tulane designated hitter Brennan Lambert made it 5-3 with an RBI groundout in the fourth.
Â
Sacramento State came back to tie it at 5-5 with two fourth-inning runs but that's when the Green Wave turned on the momentum, plating nine of the game's final 10 tallies.
Â
In the fifth, Schulz scored another runner with a sacrifice bunt and Baumgardt added a two-run blast to left center for his second homer of the season.
Â
In the sixth, Hebert scored on a wild pitch and Schulz cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to give the Olive and Blue a 12-5 lead.
Â
After the Hornets scored their last run in the bottom of the sixth, Tulane's Lambert scored on an error in the seventh inning and Beckstead added a solo bomb to left center in the eighth, his second of 2023, for the contest's final margin.
Â
Hebert and Linn added stolen bases for Tulane.
Â
Next up for the Green Wave are two mid-week contests back home at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium as Campbell visits for a 6 p.m. start on Tuesday and a noon affair on Wednesday.
