Cougars’ Fast Start Key in Friday Victory
May 12, 2023 | Baseball
Â
The win moved the Cougars to 29-20 and 13-5 in the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave dropped to 14-35 and 7-12 in league play.
Â
UH reliever Maddux Miller (3-1) picked up the victory, getting five outs and giving up just a hit. Braedyn Cunningham was credited with his first save after he pitched the game's last three shutout innings, allowing just a walk with a strikeout.
Â
Tulane starter Dylan Carmouche (3-7) had a rough outing, yielding eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and no walks over three and one-third innings. The trio of Colin Reilly, Gavin Smith and Will Prigge pitched admirably in the later stages, surrendering just one run on two hits over the contest's final five and two-thirds innings.
Â
The Cougars saw five of their hitters collect two hits each with third baseman Zach Arnold, first baseman Justin Murray and shortstop Ian McMillan driving in two runs apiece. Murray scored three times.
Â
UH pulled out to a 9-0 lead with three runs in the first inning, one in the second, three more in the third and two in the fourth.Â
Â
The Green Wave got all three of its tallies in the bottom of the fifth frame. Catcher Brennan Lambert drew a bases-loaded walk to get the home team on the scoreboard. Right fielder Jacob LaPrairie then followed with a deep sacrifice fly to right center and third baseman Simon Baumgardt raced home on an errant throw by Houston catcher Anthony Tulimero for the game's final margin.
