Green Wave Mourns Loss of Hall of Famer Al Andrews
Jun 18, 2023 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's basketball program lost one of its Green Wave Hall of Famers last week with the passing of Al Andrews. The Battle Creek, Michigan native was 78.
Andrews, a two-time Academic All-American who was the last Tulane men's player to earn All-SEC honors, made his home in New Orleans.
He was bestowed second-team all-conference honors as a sophomore in 1964-65 and followed that with honor mention acclaim following his junior campaign.
The 6'0 Andrews was the team's captain, Most Valuable Player and leading scorer during all three of his varsity seasons, averaging 18.7 points over the course of 72 career games with the Green Wave (fifth-highest in program history) to go with 4.5 rebounds. He was also a career 78.1 percent shooter from the free throw line.
Tulane inducted Andrews to its Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990 and he stayed on as a member of its selection committee.
"Al's accomplishments are legendary, not only as an athlete, but also throughout his life as a businessman, father and grandfather," said Tulane Director of Athletics Troy Dannen. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."
Following his professional basketball career in Monaco, Andrews returned to New Orleans and founded two apparel companies, Andrews Sport and tasc Performance.
