BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Tulane indoor track & field program heads to the Samford Multis, Open and Invitational starting on Thursday in Birmingham, Ala. at the Birmingham Crossplex. The meet is being hosted by Samford University and goes from Jan. 18-20.
The group competing in the multis starting on Thursday are Laura Fodor, Kaia Todd, Sofie Groeninger, Patricija Ozolina. Those that are competing in the Samford Invitational starting on Friday are Tolu Ajayi (women's 60m, 200m), Bella Carroll (women's 60m, 200m), Robyn Larkan (women's 60m, 60m hurdles, 200m), Lee Harris (men's 60m, 200m), Francisco Roman III (men's 60m hurdles, 200m, long jump, shot put), Dekel Regev (men's 200m, high jump, long jump, shot put), Alexis Esteves (women's 200m, 400m), Ozolina (women's 200m), Alyssa Taylor (women's 200m, 400m), Todd (women's 200m, triple jump), Janae Dean (women's 400m, 800m), Shane Auci (men's 400m), Abigail Heck (women's 800m), Brianna Kirsch (women's 800m), Elena Liano-Rengel (women's 800m), Reese Ragland (women's 800m), Sam Cohen (men's 800m), Zander Dunbar (men's 800m), Charlie Henne (men's 800m), Jalen St. Fort (men's 800m), Brenda Ellis (women's mile), Anna Schadel (women's mile), Alex Sharp (women's mile), Amanda Soldan (women's mile), Juan Giron (men's 3000m), Fodor (women's high jump), Groeninger (women's high jump, shot put), Kate Sander (women's pole vault), Karlijn Schouten (women's pole vault), Norah Bice (women's shot put), Sofia Caruso (women's shout put), Alyssa Dismuke (women's shot put), Bella Gonzalez (women's shot put), Emma Simons (women's shot put), Shamiso Zihumo (women's triple jump). The team will also send groups to compete in the men's 4x400m, the women's 4x400m and the women's 4x400m. The list of competitors on Saturday is not listed.
The other teams that are competing this weekend in Birmingham are Alabama, Alcorn State, Jackson State, Kennesaw State, Louisiana, McNeese, New Orleans, Northwestern State, Samford, Shorter, South Alabama, Troy and UAB.
The women's multis starts at 10 a.m. on Thursday. The track events on Friday start at 11:40 a.m. with the women's 60m. The field events on Friday begin at 10 a.m. with the weight throw. The Saturday field events start on Friday at 10 a.m. with the women's weight throw. The running events on Saturday start at with the women's 60m.
Tulane's women competed at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet last weekend. The opening day of the meet was highlighted by Janae Dean's victory in the 1000m. Dean's time of 2:52.38 set the facility record. The time also currently ranks her No. 19 nationally in the distance. Her teammate Elena Liano-Rengel was the runner-up in the event with a 2:53.63. Anna Schadel also had a top-10 placing in the event as she finished seventh with a 2:58.91
Karlijn Schouten also had a top-10 finish for Tulane in the pole vault with a 3.82m/12'06.28.
The program had five other top-20 placing on the opening day as Abigail Heck finished 12th in the 60m (1:36.41). Sofie Groeninger took 16th in the long jump (5.39m/17'08.25") and 17th in the high jump (1.55m/5'01.00). Patricija Ozolina took 18th in the long jump with her leap of 5.37m/17'07.50". Laura Fodor finished 20th in the high jump (1.50m/4'11.00").
Danna Diaz ran 9:34.45 in the 3000m to set a personal record in the event and miss setting the school record by just .07 seconds on the second day. Her time ranks her No. 2 all-time at Tulane behind former CUSA Athlete of the Decade and All-American Hanne Lyngstad. Diaz ranks second in the AAC and third in the South Central Region with the run. Also placing in the top-10 of the 3000m at the meet was Paula Vaquera. Vaquera ran a personal record 9:49.29 to finish eighth.
Diaz also finished third in the mile with a personal record 4:54.96. Reese Ragland earned sixth in in the mile with a personal record 4:58.36. Sophia McNerney took seventh with a 4:58.345. Vaquera finished eighth with a personal record 5:00.81. Janae Dean picked up 10th with her personal record 5:03.52.
Anna Schadel also placed in the top-10 in taking seventh in the 800m (2:17.76).
Other personal record and season bests set on the day include: Norah Bice in the shot put (11.65m/38'02.25"), Kaia Todd in the shot put (10.84m/35'06.75), Sofie Groeninger in the shot put (12.51m/41'00.50"), Bella Gonzalez in the shot put (11.51m/37'09.25"), Abigail Heck in the 400m (58.60), Elena Liano-Rengel in the 400m (58.76), Alex Sharp in the 3000m (10:42.32) and the 4x400m relay team of Laura Fodor, Heck, Liano-Rengel and Schadel (3:56.13)
During indoor season for the 2022-23 school year, the Tulane women had a total of four All-Conference AAC members in Kara Steele (1st – triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd - mile), Victoria Robinson (2nd – 800m) and Kristen O'Handley (1st – Pentathlon). Tulane placed fourth overall during indoor season, with 65.5 points, which was the highest-ever finish for the program in the AAC. O'Handley ended the year by achieving All-American status in the Pentathlon. During outdoor season, the Tulane women placed sixth overall with 63 points. The finish was Tulane's best since 2016. The Tulane men finished eighth during outdoor season with 26 points. The program totaled nine All-Conference selections during outdoor season in Janae Dean (1st – women's 800m), Victoria Robinson (3rd – women's 800m), Kara Steele (3rd – women's triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (3rd - women's 1500m), Aaron Gilliam (3rd – men's 1500m), Bradley Makuvire (3rd – men's 5,000m), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd – women's 3000m steeplechase), Maren Butler (3rd – women's shot put), Margot Temines (3rd – women's heptathlon). Kristen O'Handley ended the outdoor season by achieving All-American status in the Heptathlon.
Next, the program competes at the John Thomas Terrier Classic from Jan. 26-27 in Boston, Massachusetts.
