Green Wave Opens League Play at Charlotte Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University men's basketball will begin American Athletic Conference competition when it visits the Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday afternoon, December 31. The Green Wave is 2-3 in league openers under Head Coach Ron Hunter including a victory over Rice to begin conference action last season.
The matchup between the Wave and the 49ers is set to tipoff at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN+. Fans can also listen to the action live on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 106.1 The Ticket and Heaven 106.7 with the voice of the Green Wave Corey Gloor or streaming on the Tulane Athletics App and The Varsity Network App.
This marks the 26th all-time meeting between Tulane and Charlotte with the Green Wave trailing the series 9-16. The 49ers won the lone meeting between the conference foes last season 75-71 on January 27 in New Orleans. The last time the Wave defeated Charlotte came at home on February 7, 2024, by a final score of 64-63. Tulane has lost its last five against the 49ers in Charlotte and holds a 2-8 record on the road in the series. The last road victory over the 49ers for the Green Wave came on February 2, 1995, by a final score of 81-59.
Through December 29 the Green Wave ranks in the top three of the AAC seven categories including scoring defense (3rd – 67.15), scoring margin (3rd – +7.85), free throw percentage (2nd – .787), field goal percentage defense (1st – .380), and blocks (1st – 5.54). Junior Kaleb Banks rates in the top 10 in the conference in scoring (4th – 17.92), rebounding (3rd – 8.50), free throw percentage (5th - .859), and blocks (8th – 1.25).
In its last time out, Tulane closed out its non-conference slate with a dominant 99-56 victory at home over Dillard on December 20. Nine different players found the scoring column for the Green Wave with Banks leading the team with 21 points and 13 rebounds to notch his sixth double-double of the season. Gregg Glenn III and Tyler Ringgold both scored career highs against the Bleu Devils tallying 20 and 16, respectively. Kam Williams and Logan Stephens each matched their career highs with 19 points for Williams and four off the bench for Stephens.
Charlotte enters the matchup with a 7-6 record after going 1-2 at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic from December 22-25. Four players are averaging double figures in scoring for the 49ers with Nik Graves leading the way at 17.3 points per game.
The 49ers have made their living this season by getting to the free throw line and protecting the rock. Charlotte leads the AAC and ranks fourth nationally in free throw attempts (27.6) and free throws made (20.5) per game. They also lead the league and rate second in the country with only 8.7 turnovers per contest.
Following the matchup at Charlotte, the Green Wave will welcome UTSA to Uptown for the first home conference game of the season on Saturday, January 4. The game between Tulane and the Roadrunners is scheduled to tipoff at 5 p.m. on ESPNU.
