
Indoor Track & Field Heads to the Crimson Elite and Multi this Friday

Cambridge, Massachusetts – The Tulane indoor track & field program goes back to Massachusetts this Friday for the Crimson Elite in Cambridge at the Gordon Track. The meet is being hosted by Harvard University.
Tulane will send Laura Fodor (pentathlon), Sofie Groeninger (pentathlon), Robyn Larkan (60m and 60m hurdles), Patricija Ozolina (60m hurdles, high jump, long jump), Kate Sander (pole vault), Karlijn Schouten (pole vault) and Kaia Todd (60m hurdles, triple jump).
For Tulane, the pentathlon starts at 9:30 a.m. CT with 60m hurdles in the pentathlon. The other times for the pentathlon events are 10:15 a.m. (high jump), 12:15 p.m. (shot put), 2:15 p.m. (long jump) and 3:15 (800m). The Green Wave will also participate in the triple jump at 12;30 p.m., the high jump at 12:30 p.m., the pole vault at 2:40 p.m., the trials for the 60m hurdles at 3:40 p.m., the trials for the 60m hurdles at 4:05 p.m., the finals for the 60m hurdles at 5 p.m. and the finals for the 60m at 5:10 p.m.
Last time out, Janae Dean nearly set the school record in the 800m with a season and personal best mark to lead the women's indoor track and field team on the Saturday, Jan. 27, at the BU Track Complex at the John Thomas Terrier Classic. On the day the program had seven season best times and had three marks that ranked among the top-5 all-time in the school record book.
Dean had the team's highest placing in 20th of the 156 runners in the competition with her time of 2:08.75 in the 800m. The time was a season and a personal best for her and ranked her third all-time at Tulane in the event. It was just 0.32 off the school record held by Hanne Lyngstad set in 1999. Also competing for Tulane in the 800m and setting season bests were Elena Liano-Rengel (2:11.48), Anna Schadel (2:15.03) and Brianna Kirsch (2:18.54).
Danna Diaz was the team's top finisher with a season best mark of 2:46.11 in the mile. Her time ranks her fourth all-time at Tulane. Reese Ragland also competed in the mile and ran a 5:02.09.
Paula Vaquera led the team in the 3000m with a season best 9:44.57. Her time places her third all-time at Tulane in the event. Sophia McNerney also ran a season best with her 9:45.70 in the 3000m.
The team's 4x400m relay team of Dean, Liano Rengel, Schadel and Kirsch placed 18thh in their event with a 3:58.61.
For the men, Illia Kunin set the school 3000m record to highlight the action on Friday, Jan. 25. On the day the Green Wave achieved six personal records.
Kunin's run of 7:55.54 set a new Tulane 3000m record as he bested former Tulane All-American Emmanuel Rotich's previous mark of 8:03.01. Kunin's run also set a Ukraine U23 mark. He also won his individual heat in the competition by nearly five seconds over the next closest competitor in finishing fourth overall out of the 192 runners that competed.
Paul James Pam, in his first competition in a Tulane uniform, ran a personal record 8:22.03 in the 3000m.
The team's four runners in the 800m also each set personal records. Zander Dunbar led the pack with a 1:53.94. Jalen St. Fort ran a 1:54.53. Charles Henne had a 1:55.94 while Sam Cohen ran a 1:56.59.
Ryan Adkins nearly made the top-10 in the 5000m as he placed 11th with a 14:43.73.
The team's 4x400m relay team of Dunbar, Cohen, St. Fort and Henne also ran a season-best time of 3:27.12 in finishing 17th.

Jack Jennings is second in the men's 5000m (13:56.71). Ryan Adkins is fourth in the men's 5000m (14:43.73). The men's 4x400m relay team of Shane Auci, Jalen St. Fort, Zander Dunbar and Charles Henne is ninth in their event (3:26.04). Karlijn Schouten is fourth in the women's pole vault (4.00m). Laura Fodor is second in the pentathlon (3716 points). Sofie Groeninger is fifth in the pentathlon (3490 points). Patricija Ozolina is eighth in the pentathlon (3360 points) and Kaia Todd is 10th in the pentathlon (3302 points).
The program also has two event squad that rank among the top 30 nationally. The pentathlon group of Laura Fodor, Sofie Groeninger, Patricija Ozolina and Kaia Todd are ninth nationally with 13,868 points and an average of 3,467 points. The 800m group of Janae Dean, Elena Liano-Rengel, Anna Schadel and Abigail Heck is 26th nationally with an 8:50.78 total and an average of 2:12.69 per person.
During indoor season for the 2022-23 school year, the Tulane women had a total of four All-Conference AAC members in Kara Steele (1st – triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd - mile), Victoria Robinson (2nd – 800m) and Kristen O'Handley (1st – Pentathlon). Tulane placed fourth overall during indoor season, with 65.5 points, which was the highest-ever finish for the program in the AAC. O'Handley ended the year by achieving All-American status in the Pentathlon. During outdoor season, the Tulane women placed sixth overall with 63 points. The finish was Tulane's best since 2016. The Tulane men finished eighth during outdoor season with 26 points. The program totaled nine All-Conference selections during outdoor season in Janae Dean (1st – women's 800m), Victoria Robinson (3rd – women's 800m), Kara Steele (3rd – women's triple jump), Mackenzie Callahan (3rd - women's 1500m), Aaron Gilliam (3rd – men's 1500m), Bradley Makuvire (3rd – men's 5,000m), Mackenzie Callahan (2nd – women's 3000m steeplechase), Maren Butler (3rd – women's shot put), Margot Temines (3rd – women's heptathlon). Kristen O'Handley ended the outdoor season by achieving All-American status in the Heptathlon.
Next, the program competes at the Music City Challenge at Vanderbilt from Feb. 9-10 in Nashville, Tennessee.
