Tulane (0-3, 0-1) Drops Conference Opener To Rice (4-2, 1-0)
Feb 3, 2024 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS/BATON ROUGE- After an unprecedented switch of locations, the Green Wave men's tennis squad (0-3, 0-1) dropped a heartbreaking match to conference rival Rice (4-2, 1-0) on Saturday afternoon.
Due to weather concerns in New Orleans, coaches opted to begin the match with singles play at the City Park Tennis Center. About an hour into the match, a rain delay halted action, and play was moved an hour east to LSU's indoor Tennis Complex.
On court one, Billy Suarez had a dominant win, for the second match in a row. The senior defeated Rice's Yasha Zemel in two straight sets (6-2, 6-2). On court five, Luc Hoeijmans took down Rice's Petro Kuzmenok in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-4), to tie it up for the Green Wave.
However, after a valiant effort from the Owls, including a comeback win for Rice's Trinity Grear after being down 0-5, the Green Wave was unable to secure another point and fell 4-2.
Tulane will have a chance to bounce back on Wednesday afternoon when they head back to Baton Rouge to take on LSU at 5:30 PM.
