
Women’s Basketball Advances To the AAC Quarterfinals

Fort Worth, Texas – Amira Mabry led a strong overall team effort with 20 points to help advance the No. 14 seed Tulane women's basketball team (12-19) to a 65-52 victory over No. 6 seed Charlotte (16-15) on Sunday evening at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth in the Second Round of the AAC Basketball Tournament. The win advances Tulane to the AAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
Mabry scored her 20 points in shooting 8-for-11 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range. She also totaled seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Kyren Whittington recorded 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Marta Galic picked up 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Irina Parau had a steady all-around game with 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, a steal and two blocks. Kaylah Rainey picked up a basket, three rebounds and a block. Hannah Pratt pulled down four rebounds. Chiara Grattini totaled four rebounds and an assist. McKenzi Carter contributed a rebound.
Charlotte was led by 20 points from Dazia Lawrence. She was one of two 49ers' players in double figures.
The game featured no lead changes or tied scores as Tulane led throughout in truly a dominate effort. The Green Wave shot 47.3 percent from the field (27-for-57), 29.6 percent from three-point range (8-for-27) and 75 percent from the free throw line (3-for-4). Tulane totaled 46 rebounds, 20 assists, six steals and three blocks. The Green Wave led in points in the paint 34-20.
Charlotte shot 24.6 percent from the field (16-for-65), 26.3 percent from three-point range (5-for-19) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (15-for-18). The 49ers totaled 32 rebounds, 11 assists, 10 steals and three blocks. Charlotte led 16-7 in points off turnovers, second chance points 14-5, fast break points 11-7 and bench points 10-0.
Tulane took control of the game early in jumping out to an 8-0 lead and holding on for a 20-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The team kept the momentum going in outscoring the 49ers 19-11 in the second quarter to take a 39-24 lead into the break. The Green Wave strong offense continued as the team outscored Charlotte 16-12 in the third quarter to take the 55-36 lead into the final quarter. The 49ers outscored Tulane 16-10 in the fourth quarter to make the final score 65-52.
The victory advances Tulane to the AAC Quarterfinals where the program will take on No. 3 seed Temple at 8 p.m.
