Jul 15, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane catcher Colin Tuft was picked 249th overall in the eighth round by the Baltimore Orioles on Monday afternoon on the second day of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft.
Tuft, a catcher from Vienna, Virginia, led Tulane with 67 runs scored, 44 walks and 13 stolen bases while hitting .279 with 62 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 41 RBIs, 113 total bases, .509 slugging percentage and a .437 on-base percentage in 2024.
He is the second Tulane player to be selected in the 2024 MLB draft after pitcher Chandler Welch was taken in the sixth round (185th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers. This is the first time since 2021 (5) that Tulane has had multiple MLB draft choices. Tuft is the eighth Tulane player ever selected by the Baltimore Orioles following pitcher Joey Pursell (1980), pitcher Sam Amarena (1987), pitcher Todd Dyess (1994), pitcher Robbie Conway (1994), outfielder Hudson Haskin (2020), shortstop Collin Burns (2021) and pitcher Keagan Gillies (2021). Tuft is Tulane's 16th MLB draft choice since the 2019 campaign.
Tulane's baseball team went 36-26 during the 2024 season, rolled to the team's second straight AAC Championship and earned a post-season berth to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive campaign. The program defeated Nicholls 3-0 in the regionals for the first NCAA shutout since 2005 over Rice in the Super Regionals. The victory was the first for the program in the NCAA Tournament since 2016 when the team defeated Utah by a 4-1 score.
