Volleyball Pushes Rice to Five Sets, Burks Achieves Career Record

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane Volleyball started their conference play today with a match against Rice, one that saw record-breaking performances from the Green Wave. Though Rice eventually came out on top, Tulane offered a close, competitive match.
Despite dropping the first set in a close 26-24 battle, the Green Wave rebounded with a 25-21 victory in the second set. The third set was also pushed into extra points, with Rice squeaking out a 28-26 tally. The Green Wave won decisively in the fourth, dominating the set 25-16. The final set ended at 15-12, with Tulane just shy of claiming the match.Â
Tulane will face Rice University again on October 25 in Houston.Â
Avery Burks had a historic game, achieving her career high in kills. The sophomore outside hitter had a grand total of 27 kills and had broken her season high of 16 by the end of the third set.Â
The Green Wave had a season record of 15 blocks, an effort led by Sabrina Skyers and Agata Beksha. Skyers had a team-high seven blocks, with two solos and five assists. Beksha broke her blocks-per-game record, putting up six in the fight against the Owls.Â
Ava Derbes hit .400, landing 11 kills, while Zoe Rachow gave 27 assists. Katherine Crosley's serves were impeccable, serving 24 times, the most of anyone on the team, and even getting a service ace.Â
Freshman Lora Cole had a phenomenal match, putting up a remarkable five blocks, with two of them being solo. She also landed a kill. Sami Jacobs had 13 kills to back up Burks and provided 21 digs for the defense.Â

Tulane will visit the University of North Texas on Sunday, Sept 29, at 1 p.m. They will return home to host the University of Alabama Birmingham on Wednesday, Oct 2 at 6:30 p.m.
