
Football Loses Road Contest to UTSA 48-26

SAN ANTONIO, Texas– The Tulane football team (6-2, 3-1 American) could not overcome a hostile road crowd and four turnovers in falling to UTSA (4-4, 2-2 American) by a 48-26 score on Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Alamodome. The loss snapped Tulane's three-game winning streak.
Tulane scored first as Jake Retzlaff rushed it in from the one with 11:37 remaining in the opening quarter to put the Green Wave up 6-0 after a failed two-point attempt. The big play of the drive was his own 39-yard rush.
UTSA took the lead on the ensuing drive as Owen McCown hit David Amador II on a two-yard pitch-and-catch to take the lead 7-6 after the made extra point with 9:50 remaining in the opening quarter.
A Tulane turnover gave UTSA a short field to work with. The Green Wave defense stiffened though and only surrendered a 44-yard field goal from Michael Petro with 5:06 left in the first quarter to put the score at 10-6.
The Roadrunners added to the advantage, 17-6, was a six-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Devin McCuin at the 12:10 mark of the second quarter.
After a Tulane turnover, UTSA quickly went down the field and score the team's third touchdown of the half, 24-6, on a 21-yard wide receiver pass from Armador to McCuin with 3:37 remaining before the break.
UTSA kept scoring an added a fourth touchdown of the half, a McCown to Armador 14-yard connection, to put the margin at 31-6 with 45 seconds remaining before the break.
The Green Wave answered with a late touchdown just before the half as Zycarl Lewis Jr. hauled in a 10-yard pass to make the margin 31-12 going into the break.
The Roadrunners started the second half much like the first half had gone with touchdown. This one was a 16-yard pass from McCown to Will Henderson III to put UTSA up 38-12 with 10:08 left in the third quarter.
The Green Wave used a trick play to score the team's third touchdown of the game as wide receiver Jimmy Calloway connected with Omari Hayes for a 42-yard yard score to draw Tulane to 38-19 with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter.
UTSA added a 44-yard field goal from Petro to put the score at 41-19 with 14:44 remaining.
Tulane drew a touchdown closer as Brendan Sullivan connected with Tre Shackelford on a 15-yard touchdown to put the score at 41-26 with 7:10 remaining.
UTSA again answered as Henderson ran it from the 17 to put the Roadrunners up 48-26 with 1:40 remaining in the game in what would be the final margin of victory.
Next, the football team, travels to Memphis take on the Tigers on Friday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m.
Offense: Jake Retzlaff went 14-for-28 for 194 passing yards and one passing score. He also ran for 63 yards and a touchdown. Brendan Sullivan was 6-for-7 off the bench for 63 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Jimmy Calloway completed his only pass of the game for 42 yards and a touchdown. He also had a 41-yard reception. Zycarl Lewis Jr. totaled four catches for 47 yards and a touchdown. Omari Hayes picked up three catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. Tre Shackelford had three catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Brown-Stephens had three catches for 58 yards.
Defense: Bailey Despanie led the defense with nine tackles. Kevin Adams III had six tackles including one for loss. Santana Hopper, Eliyt Nairne and Harvey Dyson III also had a tackle for loss each.
Special Teams: Alec Clark led the special teams with his two punts for 112 yards and a 56 yards a kick average. Brown-Stephens returned two kicks for 55 yards. Patrick Durkin missed his first field goal of the season.
Team: UTSA outgained Tulane 523-434. The Green Wave held a 135-132 lead in rushing yards, but UTSA outgained the Green Wave 391-299. The Roadrunners' passing attack was incredibly efficient in going 32-for-34. UTSA also held a 36:55 – 23:05 advantage in time of possession.
NOTES:
- The loss dropped Tulane to 1-2 all-time against UTSA and 0-2 in the Alamodome.
- The Roadrunners extended their home conference winning streak to 24 with the victory.
- Since the start of the 2022 season, Tulane is now 38-12 (.760).
- The 48 points allowed was the most for the program since surrendering 55 to SMU during the 2021 season.
- Even with the loss, Tulane has won 20 of the team's last 22 regular season conference games (3-1 in 2025, 7-1 in 2024, 8-0 in 2023 and last two conference games in 2022).
- Tulane falls to 25-3 in conference regular season play since 2022. The .892 percentage is the third best in the country in that period of time.

- The program has now won 17 of its last 21 road games… It's only defeats since the beginning of the 2022 season was the 34-19 loss at the hands of No. 13 Oklahoma, the 35-14 loss at No. 25 Army in the 2024 American Conference Championships, the 41-10 loss at No. 11 Ole Miss in the 2025 and the 48-26 loss to UTSA tonight…The program's 17 road victories since the beginning of the 2022 season leads the nation.

- The game marked Tulane's first game played indoors since the team defeated USC in the 2023 Goodyear Cotton Bowl hosted at AT&T Stadium.
- Head Coach Jon Sumrall is now 25-4 over the course of his four-year head coaching career in games played in the months of October, November or December.
- Coach Sumrall saw his all-time record fall to 38-11 (.775) with the loss to the Roadrunners…His .775 career winning percentage ranks him fifth among current FBS coaches only behind Ohio State's Ryan Day (77-10, .885), Oregon's Dan Lanning (42-7, .857) and Georgia's Kirby Smart (111-20, .847) and Indiana's Curt Cignetti (138-37, .789).
- The loss dropped Coach Sumrall to 13-3 all-time against American Conference programs…He has defeated 11 of the 13 other current teams in the American in his career…Additionally, he now defeated 27 different schools in his head coaching career between his time at Troy and Tulane.
- Coach Jon Sumrall is 29-1 in his coaching career when his team (Troy and now Tulane) outrushes the opposition as Tulane held a 135-132 lead in rushing yards over the Roadrunners.
- Since the beginning of the 2022 season, Green Wave are now 32-4 (.888) when scoring first.
