Pompa Wins Tulane Classic while Wave Finishes Second

NEW ORLEANS – Freshman Francesca Pompa carded a 70 (-2) in the final round Tuesday to win the individual championship in the Tulane Classic presented by Chad Brownstein. Tulane ultimately finished second overall out of 10 teams in the tournament with three players landing in the top 12 in the field.
Pompa is the first Green Wave freshman to win a tournament since Daniela Holmqvist won the Conference USA Championship on April 14, 2009. The freshman saved her best for last shooting a 70 (-2) in the third and final round to move up two spots into first place with a tournament total of 215 (72, 73, 70). She finished tied for second in the field with 10 birdies including four in her final round.
As a team Tulane recorded a 296 (+8) on Tuesday to close the tournament in second place with a total team score of 893 (+29). The Wave led all teams with 39 total birdies while finished second on par 4s and par 5s.
Also landing in the top five in the Tulane Classic was Gabriella Gilrowski who finished tied for fourth with a 54-hole tally of 221 (+5). She carded a 74 (+2) in the third round to move up a spot on the leaderboard after she posted rounds of 69 (-3) and 78 (+6) on Sunday and Monday. Gilrowski also led the field with 11 total birdies in the tournament and paced the Green Wave shooting one under on par 4s.
Finishing in 12th overall Matilde Innocenti posted a 75 (+3) in the third round to close the competition with a total score of 226 (+10). She tied for second in the tournament with 10 total birdies including six when she posted her best round with a 73 (+1) in the second after carding 78 (+6) in the first.
Next up on the leaderboard for Tulane was Cristina Albertazzi who ended tied for 22nd in the standings after shooting a 77 (+5) in her third round to bring her tournament total to 231 (+15 – 75, 79, 77).
Rounding out the starting lineup for Tulane Tonka Zacharovska posted an 81 (+9) on Tuesday to land tied for 47th in the tournament. She closed the three-day competition with a total score of 244 (+28 – 84, 79, 81).
The duo of Lynne Zhang and Ruhee Pandit each finished just outside of the top 25 in the Tulane Classic. Competing as individuals Zhang and Pandit both tied with four other players for 26th overall with a three-round score of 234 (+18). Zhang followed back-to-back rounds of 80 (+8) with her best round of the event carding a 74 (+2) in the third round to move up 12 spots in the standings. Meanwhile, Pandit finished with an 80 (+8) on Tuesday after posting rounds of 76 (+4) on Sunday and 78 (+6) on Monday.
Also competing as an individual for Tulane was Sophia Yi-Ju Chen who landed in 42nd overall with a 54-hole total of 240 (+24 – 82, 77, 81).
Up next, the Green Wave will travel to Tallahassee, Florida, to play in the Florida State Match Up from March 21-23. The tournament will be hosted at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club.
