GREENVILLE, NC – The Tulane baseball team (25-18, 9-8 AAC) fell to East Carolina (25-18, 10-7 AAC) by a 15-5 score in eight innings on the road on Saturday afternoon, April 26, at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates scored 13 of the team's 15 runs in three innings to come away with the run-shortened victory. Tulane did all their scoring with multiple runs in the first and third innings.
Trey Cehajic started for Tulane and surrendered four runs in 2.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. Tayler Montiel was the first man out of the bullpen and was able to escape runners on second and third situation in the third inning but then allowed six runs the following frame on five hits. The six earned runs he allowed was more than he had previously surrendered the entire season (4). In the game, Montiel (4-1) allowed six runs on six hits to take his first loss of the campaign. Blaise Wilcenski was the team's second reliever of the day. He allowed one run in 3.1 innings worked with three strikeouts. Michael Devenney was the team's final relief pitcher of the day and surrendered four runs in 0.2 innings of work.
Gavin Schulz drove in two runs, had a pair of runs scored and a hit to lead the offensive attack. Jason Wachs picked up a hit and two runs scored. Matthias Haas totaled a hit and an RBI. Theo Bryant IV had a hit. Connor Rasmussen scored a run. Jackson Linn had a hit as a pinch hitter. Hugh Pinkney tallied a base hit. Tanner Chun drove in a run.
Ethan Norby (5-4) earned the win for ECU with six scoreless innings of relief with eight strikeouts.
Tulane jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first on the two-run Schulz home run to right field.
The Pirates answered and took the lead in the bottom of the frame on Dixon Williams' three-run home run.
Tulane wrestled the lead back in the third inning with three runs. Haas tied it with a single with Pinkney and Chun each driving in a run with a ground out.
ECU crept closer with a run in the bottom of the frame on Colby Wallace's RBI ground out.
The Pirates tied the game up and then took the lead in the fifth inning with six runs on Ryley Johnson's single, a two-run base hit from Jack Herring and the second three-run home run of the game from Williams.
ECU added another in the seventh inning on Alex Bouche's RBI single to put the Pirates up 11-5.
The Pirates completed the scoring with four runs in the eighth inning on Gavin Whitaker's three-run home run and a solo home run from Austin Irby to put the final score at 15-5.
Next, Tulane plays the third and final game of the series against the Pirates starting at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday.
