Pitching Matchups
Tulane is slated to start lefty Luc Fladda in the opener on Friday evening against the Pirates. Fladda has been the team's series opening starter in each of the first 10 weekends of the season. He is 2-4 on the campaign with 52 strikeouts in 53.1 innings worked and only eight walks. He had worked at least seven innings in three starts this year (vs. Pepperdine – 2/28, vs. Xavier – 3/14 and vs. UAB – 4/11). The 6-1 lefthander went 5-3 last year in his first season as a member of the Green Wave, sporting an earned run average of 4.77 with 61 strikeouts and 21 walks in 83 innings.
On Saturday, in the second game of the series, Tulane starts 6-8 righty Trey Cehajic. Cehajic is 4-2 on the year with a 4.81 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched. He worked as the team's Sunday starter in each of the first two weekends but has been the regular second game weekend hurler since then. His best starting performance of the season came against North Dakota State as he worked a career-high six innings against the Bison in limiting them to two runs. Cehajic hails from Shreveport, Louisiana and is in his second year with the program. As a junior he worked exclusively out of the bullpen in his 19 appearances. He placed second on the team with four saves while totaling 15 strikeouts in 27.1 innings thrown and a 0-2 record.
The Sunday starter for Tulane is to be determined at this point depending on the results and bullpen usage in the two earlier games of the series.
The Pirates are expected to start Brad Pruett in the opener. He is 3-3 on the season with 54 strikeouts in 47.1 innings worked. He has only surrendered 32 hits and also has two saves. The team hasn't officially announced a game starter for the second or third games of the series although Ethan Norby is expected to be in the mix to start one of the games. Norby is 4-4 on the year with 76 strikeouts in 55 innings worked.
Scouting ECU
East Carolina (24-17, 9-6 AAC), just like Tulane, had the program's midweek contest canceled this week due to inclement weather. The Pirates were scheduled to square off against No. 25 North Carolina State on the road on Tuesday. The ECU program has won four of the last five games.
Braden Burress leads the club and ranks second in the conference with his .424 batting average to go along with 53 hits. He also has walked 21 hits and stolen 13 bases. Colby Wallace has been the top power threat with nine home runs. He also has 32 RBIs and nine doubles. Dixon Williams has scored 41 runs, walked 37 times and stolen 16 bases. Austin Irby leads the team with his 34 RBIs. Ethan Young has been the top reliever with a 4-0 record, two saves and 65 strikeouts in 48.1 innings worked. Jake Hunter is 2-2 on the year with 40 strikeouts in 37.1 innings worked along with a pair of saves.
Cliff Godwin is in his 11th year as the head coach of the program. He is 421-204 in his career. He has led the Pirates to eight NCAA Regional appearances.
Series History
Tulane leads the all-time series with East Carolina 40-36 since the first meeting in 2003. The Green Wave sport a 17-19 record all-time in Greenville, are 18-12 in New Orleans and 5-5 when the games are played at a neutral site. The last series between the schools saw the Green Wave sweep the set from the then No.6 ranked Pirates by scores of 6-5, 7-3 and 10-9 at home in New Orleans last season from May 10-12. Tulane brings a four-game winning streak over ECU into the weekend as the program also topped the Pirates in the 2023 AAC Championship Game by an 8-6 score to secure the league's automatic berth into the 2023 NCAA Regionals. Last year's sweep by Tulane was the first in the series since ECU did the same to the Green Wave during the 2018 campaign.
Last Time Out
The Tulane baseball team (24-17, 8-7 AAC) lost the rubber game of the series to UTSA (30-10, 12-3 AAC) by a 25-7 final score on Saturday afternoon, April 19, at Roadrunner Field.
Tulane gave up runs in every one of the first five innings including 11 runs in the second inning. The team walked 15 in the contest while also giving up 16 hits, 25 runs and hit four batters.

He only lasted 0.2 of an inning before surrendering four hits and six runs in taking the loss. Gavin Smith was the next call to the pen and allowed two runs on one hit and walk without being able to record an out. Michael Devenney was then inserted to try to stem the tide in the second and got the final out in the frame. He ended up allowing four runs in a full inning worked. Jacob Moore then entered and went 0.1 scoreless. Wes Burton walked four in his 0.1 of an inning in allowing four runs. Grayson Smith was the next man up for Tulane and threw 0.2 scoreless. John-Paul Sauer was the eighth pitcher for the Green Wave. He was unable to record an out while surrendering two runs. J.D. Rodriguez was the team's ninth pitcher and surrendered four runs on five hits without being able to record an out. Julius Ejike-Charles was the squad's 10th pitcher thrown. Notables from the UTSA Series
The loss in the series finale dropped Tulane to 4-8 all-time against UTSA. The 25 runs allowed in the third game, April 19, was a season high for the program and 11 more than allowed against Lamar (3/18). Tanner Chun's home run in the third game, April 19, was his team leading seventh of the season. Hugh Pinkney extended his on-base streak to a season high 12 straight games in the loss in the rubber match. Connor Rasmussen picked up his 15th multi-hit contest of the season in the third game, April 19. Matthias Haas' four hits in the second game of the series on Friday, April 18, were a season-high and his most hits in a contest since getting five knocks against Southeastern Louisiana last season (4/30/24). He is the second player on Tulane to have four hits in a game this season along with James Agabedis III (4/5 vs. Rice). The save earned by Michael Lombardi in the middle game on Friday, April 18, was his ninth of the season and the 14th of his career to tie him with Zach Devito (2021-22) for seventh all-time at the school. Tulane's pitching staff struck out 11 on Friday, April 18, for the program's 22nd double digit strikeout performance of the season. The start in left field for Andrew McKenna in game one of the series on Thursday, April 17, was the first time he has appeared in the outfield this season as he had made 18 starts behind the plate.
Lombardi Earns Midseason Honor
Tulane pitcher Michael Lombardi was recently named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List.
Lombardi is one of 56 players nationally to earn the distinction for the 20th annual Stopper of the Year award. He is one of 47 on the list that was not on the preseason watch list.
