
Baseball Loses 20-16 On Senior Day

J.D. Rodriguez started for the Green Wave and allowed two runs in the opening frame on three hits. Wes Burton was up next out of the bullpen. He allowed a pair of runs in his frame with a strikeout. Garrett Payne surrendered two runs (one earned) in his inning as the team's third pitcher on three hits. Grayson Smith (0-1), as the fourth pitcher, allowed four hits and five runs in 0.1 of an inning. Michael Devenney entered next and allowed three runs in 1.2 innings worked on five hits. Henry Shuffler was the next man up. He threw 1.2 innings with one hit allowed and three runs. Julius Ejike-Charles allowed two runs in 0.2 innings as the seventh pitcher. Gavin Smith went the last 1.2 innings with one run, one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
Jason Wachs led the attack with three hits and four RBIs. Five other Tulane players had multi-hit performances in the contest. Connor Rasmussen totaled a pair of hits and RBIs plus a run scored. Theo Bryant IV had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Andrew McKenna recorded two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Tracy Mitchem, in his first start of the season, had a pair of hits plus a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Brock Slaton totaled three RBIs and run scored. Jackson Linn picked up a pair of hits and a run scored. Gavin Schulz had a hit and two runs scored. Nate Johnson recorded a hit, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. James Agabedis III had a hit, a run scored, a walk and an RBI.
The win was earned by Charlotte's Joel Sarver (2-1). He went 2.2 scoreless in relief with four strikeouts.
Charlotte scored first with two runs in the opening inning on a double from Dawson Bryce and a RBI ground out from Carson Bayne.
Tulane broke through for a run in the bottom of the frame on Rasmussen's single the other way.
The 49ers added two runs to the advantage in the second on Caleb Estes' single to left and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Logan Poteet with a man on third.
Charlotte picked up two runs in the third on Bryce's home run and a Tulane fielding error.
Tulane exploded for five runs in the third inning on an RBI single from Rasmussen, a two-run base hit from Bryant, a triple from Agabedis and a single into center by McKenna.
The 49ers untied the game with eight runs in the fourth, 14-6, on RBI singles from Bryce and Bayne followed by a fielder's choice RBI ground out from Riley, a single from Noah Furcht, a Estes single and a three-run home run from Poteet.
The Green Wave got two runs closer, 14-8, in the sixth on a double from Wachs.
Charlotte put up three more runs in the seventh inning, 17-8, on a wild pitch and a two-run double from Furcht.
Tulane had their own offensive explosion with five runs in the seventh inning, 17-13, on a McKenna single, a Mitchem base hit and a three-run home run from Slaton.
The 49ers added three runs to lead in the eighth. 20-13, on Bryce's RBI double, a sacrifice fly from Chandler Riley and a wild pitch.
Tulane crept a run closer in the bottom of the eighth, 20-14 on Nate Johnson's home run.
The Green Wave scored the team's final two runs in the ninth inning on a Wachs double to make the final score 20-16.
Next, Tulane heads to Clearwater, Fla. to take part in the 2025 AAC Baseball Championships from May 20-25. The two-time defending champions earned the No. 5 seed and will take on No. 4 seed Florida Atlantic (36-19, 15-12 AAC) starting at 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday, May 20.
