
Baseball Advances To AAC Championship Game Following 6-3 Victory Over UTSA

CLEARWATER, FLA – The No. 5 seed Tulane baseball team (33-24) came back to defeat No. 1 seed UTSA (43-13) by a 6-3 score on Saturday, May 24, in the third round of the conference tournament to earn the right to play for the program's third straight AAC Tournament Title at the BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Fla. Tulane has now won a conference record nine straight AAC Baseball Championship games since 2003.
Carter Benbrook (3-1) earned the victory in relief with 4.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout and just two hits allowed. Tayler Montiel picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning. Trey Cehajic started for the Green Wave. He allowed three unearned runs in 3.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Gavin Schulz led the team with a pair of hits. He also had both an RBI and a run scored. Tanner Chun knocked in a pair of runs. Jason Wachs scored a pair of runs on a hit and a walk. Connor Rasmussen scored two runs and had an RBI with a sacrifice fly. Matthias Haas had a hit and an RBI. Hugh Pinkney walked and scored a run. Theo Bryant IV walked and scored a run. James Agabedis III walked. Kaikea Harrison had a run and a run scored.
Gunnar Brown (3-2) allowed four runs in 4.1 innings to suffer the loss for the Roadrunners.
Tulane scored first with a run in the opening inning on a Haas' single.
The Green Wave added a run to the advantage in the third, 2-0, on a sacrifice fly from Rasmussen.
The Roadrunners took the lead in the bottom of the frame with three runs on a Tulane two-run throwing error followed by a two-out base hit from James Taussig.
Tulane tied the game at three all in top of the fifth on a Schulz sacrifice fly.
The Green Wave took the team's second lead of the game, 5-3, in the sixth on Chun's single through the left side to score a pair of runs.
Tulane added an insurance run in the seventh on a double play ground out that allowed Schulz to score the team's sixth run of the game.
Next, Tulane plays the team's fourth game of the tournament with an appearance in championship game of the AAC Baseball Championship against the winner of No. 6 seed / No. 3 seed USF on Sunday, May 25, at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET. The program is vying for opportunity to win the league title and qualify for the NCAA Regionals for the third straight season.
